  1. Go to this Facebook page or google it, 2 individuals repair them in the USA affordably. Frank and Gleb.

    Failing that:

Frank, REPAIR of NIKON COOLSCAN Full Restoration Service for IV V 4000 5000 scanners | eBay

    Gleb

Service and Repair of Nikon Coolscan Scanners

I managed to get my CS4000 repaired after 6yrs in storage. I did buy it used after they were discontinued. There is a fella in the Netherland but they might not be as comprehensive with diff issues / causes. There is also a guy called Alex in the USA who might be a former Nikon Engineer but he's v expensive, no component repair and simply swap parts out, maybe he got a stash of parts when he retired from them....

Edit. Oops. Didn't know you got it repaired. But FYI for the others ....

Thank you anyway RaymondC. will keep this info. haven't been to the US since june 2014, planning going this year again. lived in NYC for 19 years - 1983-2002

    Cheers!

  2. f you have a digital camera with at least 24 MP resolution, you can buy a macro lens and 35 mm slide/film holder for a fraction of the cost of a film scanner and achieve the same resolution and quality. It is also much faster, 5-10 rolls/hour compared to 1-2 hours/roll. Negative film is more difficult, due to the uncertainty of converting to positive images.I use Silverfast HDR for this conversion, but it can be done manually too. Slides are easy - what you see is what you get. You can even improve the exposure and color in the process.

There aren't convenient tools, like a Nikon ES-2 copying attachment, for larger film formats. A copy stand with a light table is probably the best, but I make do with a Novoflex focusing rail with a film copying attachment. This is a medium format shot I took overlooking Telluride, CO, probably on Fuji Reala. The copy was made using a Sony A7Rii, 42 MP, using a Nikon 55/2.8 MicroNikkor lens.

i prefer film scanner. especially older color negs and slides, Digital ICE comes really handy.

  3. Excuse me for going off on a slight tangent here, but:

With the current (supposed) resurgence of film photography, do people believe there is a chance Nikon/Canon release a new film scanner? It's really a pity that an entire segment of a (admittedly minuscule) marker basically does not exist anymore. I'd be on a Nikon Coolscan 10000 in a heartbeat!

that would be nice. i'd go for a new scanner!

  4. I used to have a Nikon 9000 connected to an old Windows Vista machine used only for scanning. When the Nikon died, I sent the whole shebang off to recycled-electronics-heaven and bought a Plustek 120. While I liked the Nikon better, the Plustek works fine, and I now have lots more free space on my desk. Life goes on, I guess.

    Thank you Kent!

  5. I have the XA and can manage to get good results. The Silverfast is beyond garbage and gennerly great results can be had with the included cyberview, although I am a VUESCAN snob.

The issues with mine is focus......it's out. Not a lot. Just enough to make the centre soft and the edges sharp. Annoying. Otherwise it works as advertised.

If I had my time back, I would go with the XE version beceause of the focus issues.

the issue with mine is also focus, but the opposite of yours, sharp in the center and out of focus on the edges.

  6. Pacific Image is the parent company, and Primefilm is their scanner branding.

I think you'll find the Plustek 8200i has no automatic slide or film advance; making batch scanning a fully-attended process and painfully slow.

It's basically the same model I had and returned. They've just changed the number.... and doubled the price!

P.S. the same scanner is available a lot cheaper without the dubiously 'better' Siverfast AI software and IT-8 calibration slide. Buying the full version of Vuescan is better value IMHO.

Thank you very much for your help!!

  7. Primefilm over Plustek any day of the week.

I own a rather dated Primefilm, and thought to replace it with a Plustek that had a higher specification on paper. The Plustek was returned after two frustrating days of deathly slow scanning, poor software and softer-than-promised results.

BTW, all the above links go to the same non-specific 'deals' page. So I'm not sure which exact scanners you're looking at.

those are not the links i copied and pasted, funny!

    never heard of Primefilm!

    Thank you!

  8. Hello,

after 10+ years my nikon IV ED is giving me trouble, took it to a repair shop here in Brazil and they said they can't fix it.

we're going to Germany in december.

Anyone recommend a repair shop in Germany?

Anyone know Dostal & Rudolf GmbH in München?

We'll be near Nuremberg and Bamberg.

    Thank you very much!!

  9. Ok, developed 2 rolls, came out weak, (i might save some pix when i scan them) (tomorrow). so i thought the time was wrong. went back to instructions and to my surprise "above times are for artificial light only. when exposing film to daylight or with electronic flash increase exposure 1 stop."

so i developed another roll and increased development by +- 50%, to 14 min. came out alright. for the remaining 6 rolls i have, i'll set the camera iso 800.

  10. Hello,

I'll be going to Germany in june, staying near Bamberg - Nurenberg.

I'd like to take my scanner to be checked.

Anyone knows a good scanner repair shop in the area?

I wonder if Nikon authorized repair still repairs scanners !!!!

    Thank you!
