Katherine,
Where do you live? I live in south florida and often go out shooting alone. I am was not affraid untill recently. I was
out shooting in an area where there are aligators. Well, I am sure so can see where this is going, but a momma
aligator came out of no where and was about 5 feet from me. I had stumbled upon her nest, and she was interested
in what I was doing there. I backed away slowly, and happily I still have my limbs. But it made me realize that even
in areas we are comfortable in, you never know.

Simon,
I believe you may be looking at too long of an exposure than you need. Just the other day I was out taking pictures of
waterfalls, with my D40 and VR 70-300mm F/4.5-5.6 G. The setttings were 1/4 sec - F/18, only because I did not
have a way to support a longer exposure without really losing sharpness. But if I had a tri-mono pod, I ceratinly could
have stopped down to F/32 to increase the exposure time, 4-8 seconds is a long time. Not that it is not possible, but
like others have mentioned you may need to purchase other things to get the shot you want.

First, thank you for the response. What you are saying falls into the basic understanding. I guess what I am asking, is hard to define. The sprit of my question wanted and answer in list for, of which I now realize may not be that easy. As with most of these questions really end with well....what are to you trying to illustrate?
I guess if you can list what your fav’s are i.e.
F/1.4 – 5.6 Action/Sports
F/5.6 – 10 Birds/Slow moving things
For example,
Thanks again,
Dallas

Hello all,
With the basics of F/stops, of which I mean, DOF, Exposure time adjustments and ISO, the physical meaning of F
stops, sweet spots of each lens being fully understood. What would the wisest of the wise here, say are the basic
rules of thumb, if any to which choice is best for each situation? Living here in Florida, I have the great opportunity to
shoot a lot of different things. I have found that f/8-11 is really good for my current set up for giving good DOF with
each subject matter, which I am sure is probably the sweet spot for my fav. lens. I am looking for a broader
knowledge of what each stop could mean in different situations?
Thanks in advance,
Dallas

"You have a $8,000 1ds mk3 and you ask that question?
Somebody please shoot me! ;-)"
I am glad I was not the only one to pick up on that!
