    STAGES OF EVOLUTION

It is interesting to one who grew up in an old brick urban house with the requisite steel fire escape landings that went up and up and down and down. I like the truncated feel to the crooked line across the image as contrasted to the brick background flat. Hot city summer evenings one might lay on the fire escape, get artsy inspired by the moonlight and then do some wall decoration. I ignore the title, not part of photo work. Call it OPUS 99. Yes, that diagonal criss cross has always been a painting subject I enjoy on canvas too. This has atmosphere. And evidence of people without people. A 1930s film set, with Newman Street Scene score in the background of the Lower East Side ghettoes...Hardly empty. No negatives at first glance, maybe if I try harder. Add a little smoke and shadow and haunted faced couples in two of the windows and it would be less vapid I guess or suppose . Hard to brush it off. Except it would work in color well I am thinking. Good one, Daniel. (As to manipulation, I no longer am experienced to judge what is honest fakery or successful fakery anymore. A hard metric to learn for a representational loving sharp- focus type so I pass on that part)

Every image worth commenting on is quote successful in my humble view. None,or only a few are perfect, remarkable, exciting to the palate, worthy- in all respects. Emotional connection, ah there is a phrase to reflect on, means that it is worth a second glance in the flood of images we get on line, -flashing story illustrations in papers. Worthy of our pecking on the keyboard to be blunt... I do not even have to admire (l.e. find pros in it to find it just " Interesting." Although to be truthful, " interesting'' sometimes means just less than 'interesting." ( How does this sweater go with my outfit? Uh, it is interesting..) This POTW is at least interesting with capital I.

I like it. And I might suggest, if you are interested, for an even tighter crop to make the figure even more prominent vis a vis the lights and street. She does look cold indeed.

Simple and dignified. I wish that her right shoulder and upper arm were better defined against the background. A touch of dark reflection or a different backlight is my thought for what it is worth. Her smile, well that could be holding braces. Maybe a little touch up in the editing would give her a hint of white. Just thinking out loud. A very nice rumpled but likable girl.

Haiku is a good image. Of a kind of verse that is spare. And what to make of the way the pitchfork is placed. I have been raking gravel. No rake goes face up. And no blade face up. Something is wrong here. Disturbing the peace.

The essence , Anders, is always how I mentally read a work and the last book I read or film I loved. I mean this only..What if , say , this spare image, focused on the coat on the fence post as " a tattered coat upon a stick." I mean could we hang an interpretation on that alone. A broken fork that can't be mended. A fence in disrepair.

The slightly ajar thing, Anders, if something amiss is called for, and second glance might be the broken fork. Poseidon needs a new tool..

Shadows and fog. A reminiscence of German expressionist film. Something sinister is going on. Strong image with simple elements that balance.

Mark, the color version is very powerful. Monochrome is nice but not as evocative of the moment. And is a good example of silhouette in an action pose. The youth against the raging plasma of a bonfire. which also gives reminiscences of camp fires at night. I like it. It tells a story that is almost primal. And I am not at all put off by a title as others may be. I flick by the title just as if it were ORF 345001 or some numerals like that. This is one that has the sharp contrast I am drawn to and is no more or less than what it depicts. Which, though lacking in obscurity or, if you will, mystery, it strikes a chord. A magic in a simple statement that I can still relate to. I do not at first glance see menace, but illumination.Good job.

The disembodied hand of an aged Welsh coal miner. A poor pensioner who gets to pick over the tailings to find scraps of coal to heat his shack. Many tales can be divined from a hand. Show me your hand and I can read your life.

I really like the lighting treatment of some of your shots. The pose in this is not bad too. Lower right torso is a little obscure on my monitor. Head is natural vs the other one where she twisted. I hope this is a positive feedback. I admire your straightforward and classic approach.
  1. Warren, do you consider this exposure to be acceptable. If you are seeking to show foliage, there is nothing better than green leaves to set it on and then hold it to the composition you seek. I do not know if the phone cam allows this, but I hope so. I wish you well. Hi Line is a great urban green idea.
  2. There are certain technical features in an photograph that make it not possible to evaluate , with or without context David. If the main subject is way darker than the background and not a silhouette, then it is hard to read it or is it a single frame from a video. What went before and what is coming after is impossible to know. Why is the woman so mysteriously dark and the man so bland and expression to hold us off reading the situation. But the mystery is not enveloping or interesting enough to say more than that, so I had best shut up. A kind of image that calls for more imagination than I can muster today, but I am ready to listen. Yes, the conversation is difficult indeed as the title says.
