  1. Apples and oranges.

I own both. NO comparison. R8 is better if you want an automatic camera with many features. R8 finder is plenty bright. Meter's more accurate on R8. Don't kid yourself, R8 is a major workhorse.

SL is good for those days of yorn feeling. If you want a totally mechanical camera, buy the SL. Some on the forum really like the SL. It's a nice machine.

  2. While in Rome in 1989, I attended a Wednesday audience of the Pope.

Afterwards, when most people had already departed, the Pope came and

walked amongst the crowd, touching Well Wishers' hands. Pitcure

taken with R4s, 28mm, Braun Flash, and K64. No manipulation of the

  3. The F2 and F1x are much larger than needed for two M's and 4 lenses. The F3x is a nice bag but the layout is very different. Size-wise it'll meet your needs, but you need to check it out before you buy it. Look at the F6 (canvas) or F6 (ballistic). I've owned both and prefer the ballsitic, and they have the same foot print as the F2 but is shorter in height. The 803 series works well. The J803 is cordura, has some padding, and has a few more pockets than the F803 which is canvas and no padding (except the bottom). They both work well. Consider the three compartment insert over the single compartment insert that they come with.

I have a number of Billinghams and still prefer the Domke's.

  4. I have F803, J803, and F5XB. Both 803's carry 2M's (each with mounted lens), 2 more lenses, and a Small flash, film, etc. The J803 (Nylon/Cordura) seems more weather resistant then the F803 (canvas), and the J has a few more pockets. The F5XB is very small and hangs close to the body a little better than the 803's, and can carry tow M's with lenses, one additional lens (tight), or two additional lenses (very tight). Also, I found that once the canvas loosens up on the canvas bags (few weeks of use), the bags tend to wick moisture/himidity and can never be adequately weatherproofed again. I think all of the J-series are better inthis regard.
  5. I have the article and thought that DAH was not that positive at all. He liked the physical layout , i.e. knobology, since it's Leica-like. Other than that, I didn't think he was very impressed. He certainly didn't like the "lens multiplication factor" and I got the sense that if he's using digital, this aint't the camera he's using.
  6. I was in Marseille France in 1981 and visited a camera store that carried Leica. I remember that the M camera (not sure if it was a M5 or what) sold for about $2500 USD. In those days, I was using Canon SLRs and remember thinking how ridiculously expensive Leicas are. My thoughts haven't changed much since then in spite of my greater appreciation for Leica qualities.
  7. The CR2 batteries should last at least a year; but bring back-ups. R8 should be OK in humid environment; bring a back-up body if you can. Bring plenty of zip-lock bags. Bring a late model (low trigger voltage) Vivitar 283. Avoid a canvas camera bag; use ballistic nylon. Canvas absorbs humidity and odors. I recommend buying an Olympus Stylus Epic P&S. Cheap, good lens, weatherproof. Good luck.
  8. Feli: The dealer did not have any new MPs and I wanted to close the deal then and there. The M6's were new w/Passport and more than $700 cheaper than the MPs. So, after the experience with the MPs, buying the M6's seemed straigthforward.

BTW, prior to returing the MP, I called and spoke with Ernst Hauptmann, Leica USA in Rockvale, who confirmed that the behavior was faulty. Sometimes the meter would work, sometimes not; sometimes the ISO dial would work, sometimes not.

I wonder if Leica follows this forum?

  9. Last week, I purchased two brand new black MPs 0.72 from a local

authorized Leica dealer. Incredibly, one of the cameras had a

defective lightmeter and/or ISO dial. This is a brand new camera!

Ironically, inside the camera box, there's a card signed by the

final inspector who checked out the camera prior to packaging

testifying that the camera is working properly. How pathetic?

I returned both cameras and bought two Chrome M6 TTL's, .58

    and .72.
