  1. Last Wednesday, I flew back from Madrid to Philly. Carry on is fine with the exception of fluids and gels. The UK situation is more complex. As you know when the plot thing was uncovered on about Friday/Saturday the 11/12th of August, the BAA allowed only ziploc bags with passport/docs, money, medications (no electronics--no nothing!). Then it was relaxed about August 14th to briefcase size carry-ons except fluids and gels (electronics were OK). Then I understand it was rescinded back to the ziploc bag restrictions about this past weekend after the bomb parts were found. Short routes (inter-Europe) have the most severe security restrictions rigth now and may continue so for those flights leaving the UK.

FWIW, when I was in Spain, I was prepared to ship my cameras back via DHL or FEDEX even though they were insured out the gizoo! Under no circumstances would I have checked them into my luggage. They would have NEVER made to their destination. My feeling was that even though the items were insured and I would eventually be reimbursed if they were stolen or broken (which would have happened), the depreciation, hassle, time, etc. was not worth it and the shipping would have been safer and faster. Incidentally, while in Spain, one of the big issues discussed on CNN was that the airlines are minimally responsible for damage, loss, etc. for items checked in to the hold. Many people aren't aware that the airlines' responsibility is so limited. Frankly, in all my years of air travel, this is the worst I've seen.

Whatever you do, do not check your M cameras and/or laptops into your luggage. You will never see them again. In fact, leave your M kit home and bring something you can live without if it gets stolen if you're forced to check it into the hold. It's really a mess.

  2. I bought my first Domke F2 in 1981; a brown one with tan piping. Since then I've owned: 2 F803's, F1X, Ballistic F6, 3 Canvas F6's, F-5XB WHPA, J2, J803, a newer F2, J3, and an F3X. The bags hold together even though the canvas gets a little ratty over time. Unfortunately, the rubber that's woven into the shoulder strap tends to disentegrate over after about 10 years and lots of use. I like them; obviously.
  3. I've used the 34Cs2 plenty of times with my MPs and D2; it works fine. However, I noticed that the exposure (illumination) is not as accurate as using the SF20 on my R8's. If the CM will used the SF20 in the TTL or dedicated mode, it might perform much better than the 34CS2.

BTW, I never tried the Slave mode illumiated while the flash as shoe mounted. I've used it off-camera in the Slave mode with my D2 and it works so-so; lots of experimenting required.

  4. In all my travels, I've been lucky to never encounter a situation where someone was hawking me because of my Leica equipment. I don't think "bad" people's action are affected at all by the brand of camera or the label or dot showing.

Basically, these "bad" people size you up as to how hard or easy the "take" is. In other words, if you appear vulnerable, then that's a much bigger influence on the outcome then the brand of camera you're carrying.

So look mean and spit a lot ergo you'll appear tougher.

  5. I have almost every Domke bag, but the the F6 bag is my favorite, and I use it for my two MPs and 4 lenses. I also use one for my R8s and my D70/D50. They may seem a little roomy at first but they're first class for travel (front compartment) and I feel that the F5X is a lttle small and the F/J803 profiles can be tight with more than one body and 3 lenses. If you are using two bodies get a F6; using one body get a F/J803. Good luck.
  6. I used Kodak Gold 200 with my Minilux while visiting a couple of years ago. It was OK, but a stretch. ISO 400 will do just find inside and since the CM has a higher shutter speed than the Minilux (1/400th), it should be fine outside as well until you shift to your "slower' film. BTW, ISO 200 will provide a single film that you can use while there if you're interested.

As far as SLR vs. CM, I really enjoyed traveling "light" with just the Minilux instead of a slew of camera gear. It's especially nice when you jump in and out of the shops, restaraunts, etc. while walking around. Enjoy!

  7. Bringing two MPs, 28 Elmarit, 35 Cron Asph, 50 Cron latest, and 90 Elmarit. Will take people pics, some landscape, etc. I usually shoot slides 100F, 400F, and/or 100G.

In Mexico, I'll visit some of the towns around the Yucatan mostly on day trips. While in Spain, I'll be traveling by car for about a week going to Madrid, Segovia, Salamonca, Cuidad Rodrigo, Toledo and back to Madrid.

For some reason whenever I shoot digital, the pictures are more of a documentation of events and not as aesthetic. It sounds ridiculous but when I shoot with film the results have "soul" while on digital they just have less significance. I still consider capturing a good photo on film a personal achievement while in digital it's a good use of PS or some other program. Yeah I hear all of the comparisons between film darkroom and digital darkrooms. I don't buy it.
