If you are only using the iPad for portfolio viewing, I would definitely only get the 16gb. I don't want to look at a portfolio that fills up anywhere near that amount of space. If yours is that long you need to consider some heavy editing.

I bought my first digital camera today. Went with a Fuji S3. It's a 1.5 crop compared to 35mm, and the lenses I have are 24mm f2.8 (36mm), 50mm f1.4 (75mm), 105mm f2.5 (158mm). The focal length I feel I am missing now is a normal lens. So I would like to hear some people's opinions on something around the 35mm (53mm) length. Here's some info about me that should help you to guide me to buying the right lens:

- An autofocus lens would be nice, because it would be able to meter correctly with the S3. All my other lenses are manual focus, and I have no problem focusing. Stop down metering is only a little annoying.

- I will only buy something that is faster than f2.8

- I am looking for something that is a good balance between quality and price. Let's say my budget is $500. I have no problem buying used equipment.

- I shoot almost exclusively in M mode, and dabble in A.

- I shoot mostly concerts. Do a little travel photography when I travel, and I work for my school's newspaper (meaning: I shoot a wide range of random assignments.)

Thanks in advance.

Oh, I would like something I can shoot on my Nikon F3 at times.

Forgetting some shots is normal for me, but I always seem to remember a few that I think are going to come out well. I am just about to process some rolls (32) from a trip to Europe last year. No doubt I have forgotten about those shots. I look forward to the memories coming back to me, as they normally do, when I see the negatives.

I've had good experiences with craig's list as well, but I have come across quite a few scams. There is no harm in emailing the person. Usually after the first response you can tell if it is a scam. As Hector said meet face to face and thoroughly check the lens.

Hope I get a chance to shoot this legendary film.
Thanks Ron!

You are already considering using alcohol in your project. Why not stick with legal drug abuse? Alcohol, marijuana substitutes (herbal blends/incense), whip-its, salvia (depending on what state you are in), research drugs like DMT, etc. I work for a my campus's magazine, and we just did a story on legal drug abuse. It will be published in a few weeks.

Jonas, if you write something up on this, it sounds like it would be a good article for the Viva Film project here at photo.net.

I have carried on my tripod in a dedicated tripod bag on a trip Panama last year with no problems.

Why not ask?

Awesome!
How did you meter for these?

Is there a university newspaper? If so working for them will help. I work for my university newspaper, and I have learned and networked throughout.

This images are great! I hope to contribute to this forum soon, as I see a Bessa R3m in my future.

If you don't think you truly need the 70-200, but want it, as Philip Wilson says. I would also consider the 80-200 2.8 L. You can pick one up used for about $600. I have no experience with it, but I have heard it is an excellent lens.

Enough for what? web use? prints? if prints what size? use as a sort of contact sheet?

I think with all the used medium format deals now people are forgetting that new medium format is expensive. Not for the average person.

-

I suggest, that whatever system you buy into, you get the 50mm f1.8. It is a cheap, good quality lens, better than the kit lens.

Check out the Mamiya 7II prices at B&H and Adorama. This is the only other modern medium format rangefinder that you can buy new that I know of. The price of the Bessa III doesn't look so far off to me.

Maybe I'll switch my major to participate.

"Then why not just shoot B&W film?"

If you can sell it for $80, sell it, but if you have it and it will only go for $5 why not try it? It won't hurt, and it will be fun.

I read a post here on photo.net about processing it like a B&W film. That could be an option.

I don't know if they allow flash, but you could try dragging the shutter and having the flash fire at the end of the shot. Also repeated flash, motion blur, panning, stitching, if I think of anything else I'll post it later

You can try shots of them getting ready or stuff after the race. Also maybe try to get closer (or if you have a longer lens) try to get tighter shots, like torso and head shots. I find the tighter shots more challenging to frame and therefore more fun.

I know exactly how you feel. I am a civil engineering major, and I was in the same boat as you last year. What I have done to remedy this is start working for my university's newspaper. I might not be doing the photography I enjoy the most, but, when I am on an assignment, I am getting payed to have a camera in my hand and take photos! It is also nice to get compliments from writers and copy editors about your photos every now and then.

Try to take a photo class. If it doesn't fit into your schedule (we have a really tight flowchart of what we need to take and in which semester) take it over the summer. If only art majors can take photo classes due to limited lab space (like at my college), contact the dean or someone in the photo department. I did this, and they let me know that the classes don't fill up over the summer. So they would let me take it then. I will be taking beginning photo this June!

These are exactly the responses I needed. Thanks!

I had no idea about the Samyang. All the options are attractive, but I'm leaning toward the CV 40. I had wanted this lens a while ago and forgotten about it since. The size is very attractive, and there is one on KEH for a good price. I figure I can return it if we don't get along.
