  1. I gather for those that like to keep the new lens box AND walk through home customs with an 'old' lens, they dismantle the cardboard origami box to flat and post it to themselves!

Those molded, re-formed cardboard lens 'holders' to keep the lens centred in the box must be annoying though!

I like the word requested there....:)

I still have a 32 and a 128 GB LEXAR 440MB/s I got ages ago for my D500 and hope I won't need to buy more until CFX arrives.... and they make a firmware update for the D500.

I do not know how often the Customs in the airport request/ask for the receipts, but many people make a copy of the receipt every time they make a purchase. Buying 2nd hand from a private can be a challenge.

  2. If XQD cards are so expensive in Europe, it shouldn't be all that difficult to get them from the US. Memory cards are small enough that shipping shouldn't be an issue, and usually there is no warranty concerns.

ship the cards to Europe is a no go, as the will be a import duty abt 8-10% and VAT of 20-25% (Scandinavia) and these fees are collected by Post Nord, who charge a fixed fee of abt USD 25!! Buy personally in the US shops and bring back should be relatively safe, but still you can be requested to proof, that your equipment was purchased in you country of residence. I have experienced that once in Copenhagen.

  3. I use a very generic one that I purchased on eBay from a seller in China. I think I paid $19.00, I've only used it a couple of times but it provides the information I need. Now that 've added a D600 I'll have to look for something else since my generic only works with my D700 and D800 and the 10 pin receptacle.

    Dawn Tech GPS

  4. I am the happy user of a Dawn Tech GPS, which however only fit the 10-pin, but where you also can use the MC-30 at the same time. I have previously had Solmeta, which imo has bad to say it mild. The Nikon GP-1 and 1A is no longer available according to B&H, and I did find a replacement. This in case you do not get the one you went for.
  5. Nikon will catch up.

I do not need a complete system, being a minimalist, I will have 1 or 2 lenses. I agree to wait.

Nikon seems to have a thicker grip and upper display.

Sigma will produce all their range for Nikon too.

But Nikon doesn't have in-camera stabilizer, does it? z 50/1.8 s has it.

Personally I have never liked how Nikon (lower tier models like D7000 render blonde human's skin) I guess Z series will be better.

Now it is time for bigger and sharper lenses than we used to use.

both z7 and z6 has IBIS but the 50/1,8 has no VR

  6. Photo bag in car – driving alone I pull the front passenger seat forward to max position and the bag on the seat, which mean easy accessible and cannot hit the floor. A friend along, bag on the backseat with the strap around the headrest , plus I have a big box (like Tupperware) in the trunk for sundry items placed on a couple of towels.
  7. Thank you very much for your comments. The comments I and my wallet likes is the first one from Thom Hogan in the comparison of D500 and D850, which means no need for a D500 for me. The type of photos I do, are Street/street portrait of ethnic people, landscape and Kite Surfing, the latter is the reason I got the 200-500mm, but not used that much, as I have to drive car to the location and stay there overnight. Unfortunately I don’t do any wildlife. My conclusion is therefore, that I get more out of D850 as a general purpose camera, as Shun Cheung also mentions, and now that a local shop has reduced the price by 20%, there will be a little left for a couple of XQD cards and then use my wife’s D7200, if change of lens is not recommended at the location due to weather conditions.

Thank you again for all your comments and Merry Christmas.

  8. My 2 cents: How about a monopod instead of a tripod for keeping the bulk in check? I can recommend an excellent carbon fiber monopod for under $50. *A monopod + a VR lens is a lethal combination and is just what your subject matter calls for.

Also consider hauling a foldable stool. Mine weighs around 600 grams and since I got it, it has literally transformed my photography.

For you, sitting down and having a heavy lens resting on a monopod is guaranteed to get you better pictures and a much more pleasant experience.

I have both tripod and monopod in the car, and the monopod is often used for the surf photography depending on the condition of the location.

  9. I first thought you said you were a teen photographer and I sure thought you'd been rode hard and put away wet, until I reread it and saw that it was KEEN photographer:)

I have been a teen photographer, but that is about 60 years ago, but is was fun -:)
