thanks to both of you and yes Marjolein, that was exactly the feeling I was after ;-)

Besides, it prints extremely well. Good to hear of you both. I'm very busy doing some other photographic work. Quite a blast too but very time consuming.

  1. that's a cool portrait Bruce. I think the reflection works out nicelywhile his look contrasts nicely with the warm sunlight. Did you consider making it completely square and removing that finger? Just wondered.

thanks. as much for your comment as for your regular visits. Yes, I've been absent for some time and my obvious visits have been very infrequent. That's not to say I haven't kept up with what all of you (and some others) have been doing in the meantime. Although it has been an awkward year in the sense that I haven't photographed as much as I'd wanted to I've kept my hand in in postprocessing a lot of photos both from other photographers as medical ones amongst which photos for a medical image atlas.

All however is well and I expect to be shooting a lot this year. I'm going to wrap up my documentary this year and if I can't find a publisher I'm going to self-publish it.

As for this photo I've been experimenting a lot with the Hipstamatic app in my iPhone and to be honest I'm impressed at what quality you can get out of it especially when you know a bit about post (I mean this not in an arrogant way, merely a practical one). Brad Evans has made a great series of street portraits with his iPhone. I've just started but want to explore it a bit further as well.

You're right Jack, it was kind of spontaneous and yes Jeff, it did print well. In fact I've printed up to 30x30 cm. Sure, it doesn't do to compare it technically to 35 mm or even MF shots but its fun to use the limitations creatively.

I wish all of you the best and especially good health for 2012.

    Happy shooting

first of all not to worry, I'm doing fine so there's no reason to read something into this. Secondly thanks for welcoming me back but am I? Well, actually I've never left, I've kept tabs on what all you have been up to. I've done and do that a few times a week but time has been an issue and I don't like to leave a comment without looking at and evaluating a photo for some time and frankly it's time that I can't or don't want to spend right now.  I've kept some distance from the internet for the most part. Partly because of workrelated projects and partly because I've done postprocessing work for other people both of which eats up a lot of time but is very enjoyable.

Also finally the fall has started which is my favourite season of the year. An incurable optimist by nature I'm very fond of the poetic melancholy that comes with it besides which it makes for great photo oportunities.

As for this photo I shot it with my iPhone but did all the postprocessing in PS. I know that for most of you it will probably be a bit of a surprise. The truth is that every now and then I shoot stuff like this but it's very rare that I upload them on the internet.

Hope you're all doing well. Also thanks for checking in.

    Take care,

it's a great abstraction, even a impressive one. I do like what you did here Jeff. It's not only the colours that I find apealing but even more so the composition. It works, greatly so.

you're right Wieslaw. In general I find them more interesting when they are preparing. Also makes it easier to talk to them. This guy came from Hungary together with his girlfriend and tried to make a living performing on the streets of Barcelona.

thanks Maria. Great to hear from you, it's been quite a while.

thanks Carlos. Know you're always welcome.

you're right Bulent. Photography is a strange thing indeed. I guess that's one of the reasons we love it so much.

thanks Gordon. A bit surreal isn't it, the effect it has I mean.

thanks Jasmine. Also for your suggestion although I have to say that I wouldn't want to lose the top op the building in the background nor the door at the right. Given that a crop seems not to bring much.

a very nice, cultured classic Dutch landscape that's all too recognisable. However, it lloks like it comes straight from the camera and since I'm allergic to blues snow I think you should correct for that. Also I think s light crop would work better from a composition point of view. But of course that's all up to you.

Een gelukkig en gezond 2011 Herman,
