1.
Was lucky enough to score some good seats for the Chelsea v. A.C. Milan friendly in Baltimore over the weekend, and caught one of the scoring kicks, right before impact.

Thought the Sigma 70-300 APO would be too dark, but only needed a touch of PP.

Drogba really cocked the hammer in the 7th minute...

00U3AZ-158717584.jpg.722b59ee395d63285b60d837e981139b.jpg

  2.
Spent some time recently trying to get good hummingbird shots with the K10D and a monopod.
This is one I caught of a male and female.
Tamron f/2.8 28-75, at 2.8 and 1500/s. Thanks to Dad for some NR.

00TunB-153817884.jpg.d4938ac9a30064f502115e3fe4ba85eb.jpg

  3. I like most of the shots in your gallery. That said, let me discount my opinions: a) I was there, and respect the challenge of the light. b) I know half of these people, so I'm partial to the subjects. c) I'm not a pro.

I now understand some of your trepidation about "bein' a photographa" better than I did: When we had talked prior to the event, you were clear that you didn't like (or weren't comfortable with) getting "that close" to folks. And I know you've had great fun (and success) shooting portraits with your 300.

I can relate to that, and it's sure easier to address the issue when it's someone else's hangup!

But getting releases from folks, and walking around with 15 pounds of gear on your hip kinda sends a message - whether you like it or not - that you're a photographer. Hobbyist or pro, I have learned a bit about what that means when I'm around, and how folks react to it: Some are hams, some are reclusive, but most are in-between.

Now that I'm through my photo-psychology 101 class, I feel like a burden's been lifted!!!

  4. Other than the shot of me and Bob, I like them all Dad. Even the blown highlights of Fuss don't detract (for me) the great profile.

Could cropping work, to bring him "closer?" Maybe even with John?

  5. Whoa. Jon? Whoa. THAT'S NEAT.

I had a 3-day weekend, so I hope this still counts... shot this today, of the U.S.S. Constellation, the last existing American Civil War-era naval vessel and was one of the last sail-powered warships built by the US Navy (built in Portsmouth, VA, now docked in Baltimore, MD).

  6. I'm waiting. I'll likely skip the 20 entirely. I don't know enough about it to just increase my learning curve for fun.

Plus, the stock market's having a bigger sale than Pentax. I'd rather buy that stuff. :-P

  7. [i can't believe I'm going to comment in this thread... so over my head.]

    But.

As I still try to learn one thing new every month on my K10D, I had an eye-rolling moment Saturday, as Dad showed me his K20D viewfinder, pressed the Fn button, and showed me that his dynamic range was set to 200%.

Now COME ON! I already have enough to learn! Just starting playing with exposure lock! My skills are getting better, but at this rate, I'll be waiting for the K50D to drop below $1000, and have to learn too much stuff to be good at it.

I'll take Justin's advice and just work on photography...
