  1. I think I agree, Ian. This is one of those shots that I do think works both ways, but removing the distraction of color puts more emphasis on the tonal values, as well as the contrast between light and shadow.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

    Regards, Joe

  2. I love the graphic nature of this shot, William. Like my 'Reflections Of Eunice' shot you commented on, this one has a similar theme with the stark dead oaks contrasting with the colorful moonlit poppies, creating a strong life/death dynamic. Definitely a wall hanger!

    Regards, Joe

  3. Thank you William and Noel for the kind words. The contrast between the dead snags and the green foliage was exactly what attracted me to this scene, as well as the contrasting light and shadow.

I also converted this to B&W, and really like the way the absence of color put more emphasis on the tonal values as well as the stark shapes of the dead trees.

I'm going to post that version, let me know what you think if you have a minute. Also, I had a hard time finding good comps that day due to the harsh noonday sun. I felt lucky to come upon this, didn't have enough time to stick around for the "magic hour". Sometimes, you have to create your own magic!

  4. Foggy day in the forest at Mowich Lake, MRNP. The mist created a

magical and ethereal atmosphere, which can nowhere be better

experienced than in the moss shrouded forests of the Pacific Northwest!

Wow Stephen, I guess we're on the same wavelength! I just got finished commenting on a few of your photos and came back to my workspace to find that you just left me one! Good karma, I guess! Anyway, I'm glad you like it. I took some nice misty forest shots as well with your work in mind. I'll post some soon. Your forest photos never fail to inspire!

    All the best, Joe

Rainy, foggy day at Mowich Lake, Mt. Rainier. Didn't see much, the

whole place was socked in. Tried to get a few decent shots nonetheless.

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade! All comments

    welcome.

  5. Thanks for commenting Ognjan and Ryan. Ryan, I know the foreground is a little dark, but the fact is, the light was fading fast. The scene as depicted is close to the actual light and overall mood of the scene. I will post a lighter version. Regards, Joe

Thanks Chris, the lighting was interesting, and I thought the perspective was somewhat unusual. But yes, the dew on the lupines was what attracted me most to the scene. Actually, it was from a wet snow that was falling at the time (in August no less, gotta love WA!)

I got some nice shots that day Pierre, unfortunately the volcano wasn't one of them!

If you look to the left of this photo you'll see the base of Mt. St. Helens. The rest of the mountain is covered in clouds. Oh well, maybe next time! The great light that day more than made up for it though!

  6. I think the pastel lighting is perfect for the scene. Stronger lighting would compete with the wonderful wave action you've captured in the foreground, which is the highlight of the shot, IMO. Great copmposition also!

Thanks for the compliment Linh, I was attracted to this scene because of the quality of light. I loved the way the mix of sun and clouds cast shadows upon the middle portion of this shot.

    Regards, Joe
