Emilio I know. The goal though was to make it on the list of "Most active threads." We did it! Only about the first 3rd of the thread actually addresses Jon's question.

Hi,
I'm going to be shooting my first big event in late April - a sock hop for about 70 Girl Scouts and family. I need some help selecting a background for this event.
Most of the photos will be daughter & father. I'll be taking 3 strobes, 2 in front and one for the hair. I just purchased a backdrop stand from Adorama, but need some advice on what to get for a backdrop.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. BTW, all my current backdrops are one color or another, and I was thinking I should get something neutral so as not to clash with all the different colored dresses and other cloths.

Thanks

I agree it's the nature of forum discussion. I think it has something to do with the questions asked and the desire for people to want to stay on-topic.

-

"Yep. You see a lot here on pnet. No doubt easier for some to discuss rather than images and image-making. And that talent can be jump-started by simply putting down a credit card for a purchase."

Images and image-making wasn't the subject of the post, lens comparison is. That's why we're talking about the advantages of using one lens over another - which includes discussions of that "gear head" stuff.

Mark you're brilliant. I mean what was I thinking spending all that money upgrading my gear when I could have just stuck with my old Nikon Coolpix 880. I feel like such an idiot.

In the original post Jon stated that he was a little disappointed to read that according to some reviews the 50mm 1.4 outperformed the 24-70L at 50mm. I, and I think many others, would have expected the 50mm 1.4 to outperform the 24-70L. I think that's what got the whole debate regarding L vs non-L going.

Also, I wonder if there is a time limit on access to the download. If my computer crashes 3 years after I downloaded the program, will Adobe still allow me to download my version for free, or will I need to buy the upgrade to whatever the latest version is?

-

IMO at 2.8 the 50 1.4 blows the 24-70 out of the water. And, at least for me, 2.8 isn't fast enough for low light situation. I love my 24-70, but for low light situations where I don't need the flexibility of a zoom, I'll use the 50 and Sigma 30 1.4. Of course with your 5D the higher ISO is probably cleaner than my 30D.

-

Hmm, Jon you right. Maybe I should upgrade my monitor and print process because the magical qualities of my 24-70L just aren't shining through.

-

Maybe I'm missing something here but I just assumed/expected that my 50mm 1.4 would be better then my 24-70 2.8L.

I've done that already, no issues without the flash.

-

I reloaded the firmware as suggested and it didn't fix the problem. So, if there isn't anything anyone else here can think of, I'll be sending the camera off to Canon for a fix on Tuesday.

I would think you would see a different in how the folks at these labs actually handle you film. You're probably more likely to get scratches on your negatives going with the consumer junk factory.

Mark I don't think so. The light on the left, when looking at the photo above, was the one that was attached to the camera and all the other lights are triggered off of that one. The shot gets gradually darker, rather then being completely underexposed, which means there's something else going on.

Nadine,
Guess I'm not communicating clearly. I'm not using any other flashes with the Alien Bees. The shots with the onboard flash and 430 are different shots, not with the Alien Bees, and getting a slightly different result.

Dan,
How do I go about re-loading the operating system? Thanks, and hope that is the issue.

Nadine,
The camera is set to M. I'm using a sync cord to attach the camera to one of the Alien Bees units, which triggers the other two lights. For the test at 1/4000th, (and also did one at 1/8000) I was doing it with available lighting just to see if I could match the effect. Nothing.

Also, I've taken shots with the onboard flash and my Speedlite 430 EX and every few shots it looks as if the shutter isn't syncing with flash, so I do get a very under exposed shot. But, its not like the shots with the Alien Bees where one side of the picture is darker then the other. So, something is up with the camera syncing with the flash - with two different results.

I just did some test shots @ 1/4000th and didn't see this issue, so why is it only happening with my studio light? Any thoughts anyone?

-

Well, tested the camera using 1/125th and about every 10th to 15th shot got similar results to the photo posted above. Guess I'll be sending it off to Canon to get it serviced.

I'll slow down the shutter speed and see if that makes a difference. I've been using this setup and shooting at 1/250th for about a year now and this is the first time this has happened. (Yesterday was Friday the 13th, and I had other strange things going on with my computer as well so who know.)
I've never seen this issue manifest itself just shooting in available light. My lights are triggered by light from the one strobe that is connected to the camera. So I don't think low batteries are an issue, unless there is a battery inside the Alien Bees that I don't know about. We'll see how the shoot on Monday goes.

Thanks guys for your help.

I was doing a shoot yesterday when I got several shots that looked like the one posted below. My shutter speed for all the shots was 1/250 sec. I was shooting with Alien Bees lights. I would say out of about 150 shots, 13 where like this. I don't think I'm close to 100,000 shutter cycles which is what the 30D is rated at. I guess I should try slowing the shutter speed down to see if the situation improves. If this is an issue with the camera, does anyone know what Canon would charge to fix it.

I've got another shoot on Monday and hopefully by slowing the shutter speed this issue won't be a problem.

Any thoughts?

Hi Folks,
I'm using Jasc Paint Shop Pro to resize my images. I have the print size set to inches ex: 4x6 but then there is resolution which is in pixels/inch. What should I be setting that to? And, should I change the resolution for different print sizes?

Thanks for your help.
