I agree with TM and Howard. Another possibility is using a different focus point.

On my Canon I use the * button to lock focus and the shutter release to lock exposure.

1. No

2. Yes. I'm not a big fan of this in any photography but as David said, I've had people request it.

I agree with Matt. I never erase my files, I format the cards in the camera after I've uploaded the files. I also use a card reader, I don't upload directly from the camera.

I have the same problem with RAW files from my G10. Depending on the file and what I want to do with it I will either convert to DNG and process in CS2 or start processing in DPP and transfer to CS2 to finish.

I like having choices in software.

I've used SterlingTek for both my 30D and G10 with no problems. I've never read of any problems with their batteries on PN, POTN, and dpreview. It has been awhile since I've been on dpreview though.

I would think that if there have been problems with their batteries it would make its way to one of these three sites (actually probably all three) but peace of mind is valuable so if you are going to sleep better by using only Canon batteries then do so.

While looking at Jim Clark's set up I noticed the pop-up toaster sitting on the counter. I think I would have gone a more complex route that included the toaster......

The videos of the cat are hilarious.

"much of Ansel's expression in photography was dependent upon his darkroom ability to choreograph new tonal relationships not found in real life. And sometimes not found in the negative either - but created when he made the print".

I wonder if Ansel could have used digital (either capture or scan) and post processed with Photoshop would he have felt different about color?

I haven't used the Canon but I have the Tamron and love it.
A few obvious differences are the Tamron is a constant f2.8, and the Canon has IS. The mount on the Canon is plastic and the build quality of the Tamron seems to be stronger.
Both lenses have a lot of user reviews on fredmiranda.com with the Tamron rated higher.

I agree with the suggestions to shoot in the mode you are most comfortable with. I don't know how long you have before you leave for your trip but what I would suggest is spend a lot of time outside shooting to get some experience with it.

This will give you a chance to experiment with different modes, learn when to make exposure and focusing adjustments, etc. and become more familiar and experienced with shooting outdoors and the variations in light you will be dealing with.

Sounds like a great trip. As I understand it the number of people allowed to visit Galapagos is limited, something like a yearly quota, correct? Be sure to share some of your work with us when you return.

Mpix, I like their work, variety of print sizes, and the way they do B&W.

-

I notice no one has mentioned print quality. I sometimes use Walgreens for test prints but for anything else I use Mpix. Their prices aren't that much different except for shipping of course and I like their B&W work. I have some opportunities for displays coming up with possible sales and I'm thinking of a more custom lab like Dalmatian might be better, at least eventually.

Any thoughts on this?
