  1. Arthur - looking forward to seeing your picture of the week.
  2. Summicron 35mm, M10. Gentleman on City Bus, downtown Vancouver.
  3. Yet another reason for y'all to move to Canada. It is still US$9.99/month here.
  4. I totally agree but "chacun à son goût". There is a bigger point here which is that it is inevitable that AI is making its way into Digital Photography, and that it will be very disruptive.
  5. And for decades people said that a computer could never win at GO because of combinatorial explosion. Turned out they were wrong. (Computer Learns To Play Go At Superhuman Levels 'Without Human Knowledge') During my years as a CS prof I was very dismissive of AI, and, especially neural networks. How very very wrong I was.
  6. It looks to me like Topaz have jumped onto the AI Deep Learning bandwagon. So the question is this: can one convert JPEG to RAW? On a superficial level, the answer is of course YES. They are after all just two different file formats. So then the question becomes is anything gained by doing this? The simple answer is NO. After all, when one edits a JPEG in a photo editor, one is editing in a kind of RAW mode: manipulating an RGB image, and then saving the results backs as JPEG. The point of using RAW is to have access to all the information made available by the camera. But there is a more interesting question: can modern AI Deep Learning techniques be used to recover information that was lost in the RAW to JPEG translation? I would not dismiss this possibly so quickly. However, I would want a lot of evidence that someone had successfully managed to do this.
  7. Paddler4, I want to thank you for giving the OP such a good answer. I want to add something tho for anyone (like me) who uses a Mac with OS X. When you choose a printer profile from Lightroom, the Mac printer driver automatically turns off color management in the printer. If you open the "Color Matching" part of the print dialog, you will see this: Notice that the two choices are greyed out, but "ColorSync" is selected. ColorSync tells the printer to use the profile, not the printers own management. If you choose "let printer manage" in Lightroom, you see this: Notice that the selected button is "Canon Color Matching". If you choose "Color Sync" in this case, you are then given a drop-down list of profiles to choose from - the same list that you could have chosen in Lightroom. I hope this helps Mac users: I have not found this documented online before.
  8. M10, 75mm Summicron. Heather park Vancouver, this morning.
  9. Spring has sproinged big time in Vancouver, bringing out the blossoms and the garden service vehicles in profusion. At the end of my street, I saw this garden truck. I have no idea why they have so many shovels. I think it is because my part of Vancouver is a a major zone for houses being demolished and replaced by new houses - almost every street near where I live has this going on. And of course, all of these new houses need new landscaping.
  10. OK, thanks all for the comments. What I will do is experiment with my own phone, and see what I can learn. The picture was taken down by the moderator because it was not my picture to post.
  11. I was not asking about exposure. I was wondering what post-processing tricks were used to get good color saturation.
  12. Picture was taken with an iPhone 8. Photographer did not think they did any post processing. I cannot show the photo, but just in case someone is interested, here is the histogram: By comparison, here is a histogram of one of my photographs that (until now) I thought was nicely exposed: I suspect that Apple does some heavy lifting on RAW conversion. I also see that I have much to learn!
  13. M10, Summilux 50mm. Through the window of a local pub on Cambie Street, Vancouver.
  14. I am doing a class a local Art university. One of the students in the class presented a photograph (I am showing a selection below). The color is amazing to me. I think the original was taken on an iPhone. I am wondering if the iPhone did some magic, or if there was some post-processing was involved. Do you have any idea how this color saturation was achieved? (It does loose a little in exporting/uploading, but I think you can still get the idea). https://d1ro734fq21xhf.cloudfront.net/attachments/2019/04/1555109_41e0e5c924c912d419204e3867de5cd8.jpg Maybe it was just a perfect exposure, but I get the feeling there is more going on here.
  15. I was walking on Main Street at 11am on a Saturday morning. There was a party going on at a pub/restaurant called "The General Public". It is usually closed on Saturday mornings. I asked the people in the photo what the occasion was. They said it was a "hair party" for someone's birthday. Everyone wore a wig. That is all I know.
  16. Morning "Hair" Party, Main Street, Vancouver. M10, 35mm Summicron
  17. Ah and I missed a big one: Home The Caputure Photography Festival. However this is more of an art festival than what we typically see in this forum.
  18. Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival: Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival: April 4-April 28, 2019 - Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival April 27 - May 5: Vancouver Opera festival (Vancouver Opera – 2019 Vancouver Opera Festival) April 15 - 19th: TED 2019 Weather is good right now. A lot depends on your Doctors interests. Van Dusen gardens is a nice botanical garden which is off the tourist beaten track. And she (he) should have late afternoon drinks at Seasons in the Park in Queen Elizabeth Park - good views of Downtown Vancouver. The Museum of Anthropology at UBC is about 20-30 minutes from downtown, but is worth a visit: Home - Museum of Anthropology at UBC
  19. M10, Summicron 35mm. Vancouver Art Gallery Cafeteria.
  20. Cameraquest are restricted by Voigtlander from shipping outside the regions stated.
  21. I wanted to find all the photos I took on a Friday. I discovered that, if I created a text file that looked something like this: s = { id = "89EEBA2B-73EC-49DD-BBFE-67640BA42E9D", internalName = "Smart Collection", title = "Fridays", type = "LibrarySmartCollection", value = { { criteria = "captureTime", operation = "==", value = "2016-03-18", value2 = "2019-03-24", }, { criteria = "captureTime", operation = "==", value = "2016-03-25", value2 = "2019-03-24", }, ..... combine = "union", }, version = 0, } and then imported it as a smart collection, I got what I wanted. You can also create the collection within Lightroom, but adding all the dates can be very tedious, so I wrote a small program to generate the text file. Just in case you find this to be useful.
  22. I host my stuff using a local ISP - cost is about $5 per month. I build the website on a Mac using an app called Sparkle, and FTP the results up to my website. Works well for me.
  23. Look at Cradoc fotoSoftware - Business Software for Freelance Photographers - you might find it useful.
