Southeast Alaska

One of my favorite places, in the high-altitude backcountry of
Revillagiggedo Island of SE Alaska. Also, one of my favorite times:
silent dawn with fog rising and a minute plume of smoke rising from a
camper's fire in the distance.

Simplicity: a huddled mass of little buildings set in a large landscape which looks like it suffers long winters. You've created a composition which speaks to harsh winters and short summers. Congratulations. Judy

But don't eat them!. These denizens of the forest are very poisonous,
but they are incredibly beautiful and colorful. They arrive in autumn here
in SE Alaska. These were growing under forest cover at the edge of the
waters of the Inside Passage of SE Alaska.

I haven't heard that. I just see them spawning in the streams. Don't know how this year's returns compare to other years. I'm sure that will be reported at the end of the runs. You'll probably hear as soon as I do. I know there was grave concern due to the heat and shortage of water in the streams. I believe that was an expression of fear rather than an actual result. We're getting plenty of water now.

Fall comes early to the backcountry of SE Alaska. Sunrise warms the
saturated, muskeg swamps in the highcountry, causing fog to rise in
response to the rising temperature. It's a quiet time of year, as fall
settles in. Bears fatten on spawning salmon, and wolves call to each
other across the peaks and valleys.

Early morning fog rises from the waters of Ward Lake and its inlet where
migrating salmon return to spawn.

This is a much more typical view of our island than any sunny shot
you'll see. Shrouded in clouds and rain, it is not beautiful, but it is
solitary and quiet. Rose hips ripen in the chill, and waves, beaten by a
southwesterly wind, are the only sound you hear on an early morning
walk.

Incredibly interesting and attractive shot. The repetitive curves and stone detail is lovely.

Such a lovely, thoughtful presentation.

Shots like this always fill me with an unexplainable hope.

Rare, calm, and balmy morning along the Inside Passage of SE
Alaska. "Tube fog" lays heavy in the passes of the mountains of Prince
of Wales Island, twenty miles west of our island, and filtered sunlight
bathes our world in an ethereal glow.

Nice to find you onboard, Mike. Your shots of Skagway and the surround are unique and incredibly beautiful. I've enjoyed a slow journey through your portfolio and am looking forward to seeing more of your work. Judy from Ketchikan

Diligent gold panners still are rewarded for their work in the sands along
this roaring, glacial-fed stream which gains its particular color from its
origins high above Alaska's capital city of Juneau.

Wow! I don't know how you did that, but you showed that calla lily to it's most graceful advantage. Just lovely. A feast for the eye!

Known for it's stinging spines as well as it healing properties, Devil's
Club spreads it's umbrella-like leaves to the sun filtering through the
rainforest canopy.

I love the transition from fall to winter, caught in the moment of change. How nice to see early snow in my favorite part of the world. Looks like you got great fall color. Hooray! Love the peek through the opening of the trees to the distant mountain.
