Looks Good Enough To Eat

But don't eat them!. These denizens of the forest are very poisonous,

but they are incredibly beautiful and colorful. They arrive in autumn here

in SE Alaska. These were growing under forest cover at the edge of the

waters of the Inside Passage of SE Alaska.

Great photo ... but having eaten these Amanita Muscaria mushrooms on several occasions (after reading John Allegro's "The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross") I have to disagree with the common conception that they are deadly poisonous. They have been used by Shamans in many cultures over the centuries ... and although hardly suitable for a steak and mushroom pie repast ... if treated with respect and taken in Shamanic traditional circumstances one can manage to live through the experience and maybe even glean a little esoteric knowledge from the whole venture.
