  1. I once wanted to hire a photographer who claimed that he shoots all his formals with studio lighting. On the first job, the person always comes to assist and watch and shoot a little, whilel I see how he does. Anyway, by the time he set up all his equipment, we finished shooting all the formals. So much for that. You really don't want to set up studio equipment with time eating away at your shooting schedule. For that matter, you have to knock the equipment down and carry all of that equipment. The more you have to do the more chances of a screw up. For weddings, work portable. You may know the difference, but the people you sell prints to only care about the way they look. Make it nice (It could be done with portable equipment), be nice to them and they'll be very happy and reccomend you to their friends and relatives. On a wedding day, portability and speed are of the essence!

  3. A pro lab deals mainly with professional photographers who bring in lots of work, as compared to 1 or 2 rolls, hance, the lower price. Volume dictates price. As the owner of a pro lab, what makes a pro lab different is that they are geared for colors and exposures that a professional will use in portraits, weddings, and some commercial work. A pro lab will also give you all the sizes with the same color and density and will spot all the work and will gladly remake if you are not happy.

  4. You tried to do the right thing by trying to cooperate. However, If I heard a threat coming out of anyone, my first reaction is to say that I make look calm and harmless but when I'm crazy, I would kill. Don't get me crazy. You touch my worker or me and you'll see how crazy I get. At that point, I would work to get the best photos and not worry about what he wants or where he positions himself. I now realize I can't work with a guy like that, and continue to worry about my work, with an eye on him to make sure he doesn't try anything and is very aggrevated. I would also caugh a lot when I'm near him.
  5. Once you get paid for your photos, it really doesn't matter who else takes photos. Do what you're supposed to do and don't worry about anyone else. I've always said that if I was allowed to sell drugs with my photos, I could give CVS a run for its money! It ain't gonna happen. Also, should there ever be a time when you screw up and not have the photos you're supposed to have, It's good to have another photo to "borrow" and put into your album, from anyone one else who took the photo, including the DJ. It has happened.
  6. I own a pro lab. A pro lab is one that caters to the professional photographer, and thus is set up for delivering the optimum quality work for portrait, wedding and some commercial photographer, at professional wholesale prices, which are half of retail prices. A pro lab will try to make you happy and if you are not, will GLADLY remake the print to your satisfaction!

  7. Have them reprinted. They should be able to reprint them for you. Insist on not paying for the reprints. They should give you nice clean work. If they don't or don't want to correct their mistake for free, find another lab. The fault is in the lab!
  8. In a way it does take the same batteries. The SQA takes one battery that is 6 volts. If you were to take that battery apart, acually skin it, you will find inside 4 of the smaller batteries that the SQAI takes. When I bought my brand new SQAI, it came with the battery for the SQA. I called Tamron and they told me to take it apart, and sure enough, out came the 4 smaller batteries for the SQAI.
  9. Hi everyone:

Pro labs are actually cheaper than consumer labs with a much greater quality. You are probably thinking of commercial labs, which specialize in commercial photography, as compared to a pro lab, which specializes in wedding and portrait photography. A pro lab is very cheap compared to commercial and consumer labs. In new York, try Austin Photo labs 222 Merrick Road, Rockville Centre, N.Y. 11570

  10. As the owner of a professional lab, I must say that those lint lines that appeared on you photographs should have never been delivered to you. Sure there are times when you have to do remakes. I have always taken remakes with a smile. When a photographer requests a remake, I gladly do it, evern if I lose money. I look at the end of the year dollar, not the remake amount. I want the photographer to come back again and again. Sure there are times when we miss a tiny spot, but what I saw on there is pure disregard to your work. When your work is printed at the lab, someone should look at the work and make sure it's perfect before you get it. Get in touch with me, I would be glad to do your work right!

  11. Many years ago I joined PPA. They had a special for the year half price So I joined. Three months later, my membership was over and I was required to pay full price. I had protested and was told that the membership was until the end of the year only. Nowhere in their ad did it say so. No one in the organization listened to my protest that it was misleading and very crooked. After many protests from me and vows never to join their organization again and not speak highly of them and try and stop others from joining, did they finally insert into their ad that the special was only to the end of the year. By that time, or course, I had been had. I had been had by a group that I put my tust in and wanted to be part of. They took my money and told me that the stuff that they mail me was more than worth the money. Same junk I get in the mail, same article I read everywhere. That kind of people I don't want to be part of. FORGET THEM, THEY ARE USELESS!

As for WPPI, I really have no experience with them, but after PPA, I will not join another organization, until they prove to me they are honest and have genuine interest in the photographer, and not his money. STAY AWAY FROM PPA!

  12. From what you describe, it seems like you should be able to carry the cameras on board as carry on luggage. Since they are digital, you should not have any problems sending it through xrays. I just came back from Vegas with my digital and no problems at all. Slipped the camera bag through xrays and was sent right through. Good luck!
  13. It's not a good idea to promise any amount of prints. You never know what the wedding will be like, as you found out. I never promise any amount because of that. I tell them the amount of proofs will depend on your wedding, The busyier your wedding is, the more that's going on, the more I shoot. But, if you are threatened with a lawsuit, find a nice print of the bathroom and reprint the amount short. You should have an idea of how much you need to shoot and if you find yourself short at a wedding, just keep shooting anything and everything to meet your obligation. I know it sounds rediculous, but you gotta do it. They know not what they say when they are drunk. But when they are sober, they will hold you to your contract. Go back, shoot the bathroom, the floors, the halls, and send her the rest of the prints. This way you meet your obligation and hand the annoyance over to them.
  14. when I see glass in the photo, I try to get another angle so the light will reflect sidways instead of back into the camera. If I can't move to another location, I kneel down to a low angle and the glass highlight reflection is covered by the people. It works! Be careful though, I now have to have my knee replaced.
  15. It depends on the flash head! I use an Armatar Flash which has a round head on it. I eat lots of wonton soups for lunch and the cover for the soup is perfect as a diffuser. It's long lasting (been using the same one for 4 years), costs nothing extra, much cheaper the camera company diffuser and works perfectly. If your flash can take one of those, use it. They're great.
