  1. S. Linke's first sentence was a completely neutral sentence. The "alas" could be interpreted as a response to reading the actual news that things are not going well in Leica.

It is those people who jump at any reference to Cheney as a political attack, and flung terms like "smug liberal" that need to drop their political/ emotional baggage somewhere else.

PS, just in case people attack me, let me say that I am proud that I am not a SMUG liberal. Thank god I'm not a complacent conservative either.

  2. Fact of life is, both of you have OK cameras but crappy lenses.

No matter what system you choose, you would have to pay more for the lenses.

So, if you are going to stick with your gf, it is a question of who takes more pictures, and if it is you, do you like your camera body more than hers, bearing in mind that in some ways the Elan is a more capable machine.

The fact of life is, there are lotsa used Nikon gear, so if you want to buy 2nd hand, it may look more appealing. However, many of the old equipment are not fully compatible with the F80 body, or the N65 for that matter. So one is not necessarily cheaper than the other.

I am an amateur who owns both systems, and frankly, for the AF stuff, I like Canon more, but this is just my choice.

  3. I have a Pentax 645 system, and I have the 45-80, 75, and 150.

I think zooms are decent since speed is not a problem with MF, which should really be harnessed to a tripod.

But if one is confined to primes, then for a 6x6 system, the typical setup should be 50/80/150 or 60/120/180 depending on what you shoot. I don't think why a 645 system should be different.

35mm if really really wide, I think, for normal use, unless you also crop, equivalent to a 21mm in 135 world.

To answer your question, this would mean that you give up to capability of doing portraits by foregoing a 150.

  4. Anyway, I did not Eric's question.

The FX and GX have identical lenses. There are some who would say get a 2.8F instead, my I do believe the older lenses are less contrasty.

I own a M7 with 50mm and 80mm lens, and a SWC. I personally think that shooting MF (6X7 and 6X6) with those would be more flexible than a XPan. The latter is more convenient though.

  5. A name is important because Zeiss has a record of producing great lenses. This is the difference between Zeiss and say, Canon or Nikon which have their range of consumer zooms.

You would not think Zeiss would jeopardize their reputation and tradition by producing a 2nd rate lens, would you?

Similarly, as Cosina mgt knows, the company has produced its share of cheap consumer products. It needs to differentiate its line of quality RF lenses from the cheap stuff that it uses to produce.

How would you feel if a new company launches a new range of lenses called Zosina, and tells you that half the lenses in the lineup are junk and half are good ones, and you have no way of telling which ones are good?

In most products, it is the value of the brand which deters producers from cheapening their products. The brandname is a characterization of quality. After all, you would more likely buy stuff from B&H/KEH or even an Ebay seller with a high rating, than bid for stuff whose seller is some Nigerian entity with zip sales record.

  6. It is very odd if you are considering a 43mm for the M7 (a 6x7) and doubt whether you need anything wider than a 43mm for Hasselblad (a 6x6). You really should look at the SWC and the new 40mm for Hasselblad.

If you are stunned by the Leica, which has an aspect ratio of 3:2, imagine what wideangle will be like with an aspect ratio of 1:1. However, if you do like the 24mm aspect, maybe you can also consider the Rolleiwide.

I own a 903SWC, and a M7 with 50mm. Before I purchase the wideangles, I used to shoot with a VC 15mm and then crop it into a square to judge the impact. My feeling is, if you can handle a 24mm on a Leica, it will be easy to adjust to any of the MF cameras.

  7. I can get a disposable camera that comes with a roll of film for $8. Throw i processing (another $4) I can get 36 pix for $12.

So for sub $25, I think digital outperforms film.

For $200, you can get a pretty decent digicam, or a pretty decent PnS. I think it's a toss-off. But if you are inexperienced, maybe digicam is better.

I think this holds true until you hit Us$4000 when you can get a cheapskate Med Form but a Nikon MF scanner.

  8. I would have thought it's just the lens system, but there were specific shots on the camera.

What would be a killer system now? a M-mount digital with a 18mmX36mm sensor. The digital X-pan. This eliminates the problems with light-falloff and oblique rays at the corners when using a wide-angle, and you still get the horizontal coverage. ie a VC 15mm will still give you 15mm angle of view.

The sensor would be cheaper because will be 33% smaller than a full-frame.

What would be really nice would be the ability to switch from 18x36 to 18x27 on the fly. This way, you can get a 1.3x sensor, ie the same size as a Canon one. I can plug in a 28 summicron and it will be just like the regular 35 summicron! This machine will be more useful than the R-D1 with its 1.5x sensor.

I like this idea more and more.

  9. It has to be a film camera.

the only way you can forget about colour cast is to use Tri-X or other B&W film.

Although the extrusion on the side can be the hinge of a LCD, most of the LCD hinges are very narrow to facilitate rotation. This one is the width of a roll of film.

It will be great if the G 21mm is available in M-mount.

Whatever the Zeiss camera, the lens offering means more competition for Leica. The going gets tougher and tougher.

  10. Btw, is it OK for p'netters to download pictures that others have created from someone's portfolio and/or previous threads, alter it, and post it somewhere else, WITHOUT PERMISSION?

I think this should be a matter of principle that we respect other people's copywrite.

It is also not a good joke since the mutiliated images were, if I remember correctly, posted on multiple threads.
