  1. I think you would likely do more damage, if without the right equipment and environment you attempted to dis-assemble a lens to clean it. I would recommend you clean only the exterior of the lenses...leave the interior to trained professionals. The cost of having the interior cleaned would likely cost more than you would net from the sale of the lenses themselves...

The best course of action would likely be to clean the exteriors, and then list the lenses for sale with the all of the information about their condition listed. There are likely alot of photographers who would bid on them as is.

    My 2 cents anyway.

  2. Nikon lenses give you durability and some (very minor) increase in image quality..I say that comparing apples to apples...meaning comparing Nikon to Sigma EX (pro)lenses. You really have to decide what your budget allows. You aren't going to be able to take many pictures without "any" lenses...so start out with some less expensive Sigma lenses...use them for a few years...hone your skills...and save your pennies for some nice Nikkor lenses down the road. Either way...the EX Sigmas will out shoot you...they just won't handle being knocked around like a photo journalist knocks equipment around.

By the way...I own both Nikkor and Sigma EX lenses...

Silent wave refers to Nikkors auto focus motors...and image stabilization does help...but then again...so does a good tripod.

  3. This is a subjective series of questions...expect subjective answers.

I would use a faster lens...to limit depth of field. A sharp background can be an annoyance in portraits. You didn't say if you were using digital or film...which camera you are using will have alot to do with what will look better. At any rate...I would use a medium telephoto...to flatten the picture some...wide angle or normal lenses would tend to accentuate "older features". Also...is this being done in a studio setting or in the field for more candid type portraiture? Answer these and I'll try to be more specific.

    Have a great day!

  4. Will this lens....Nikkor 50mm f1.2 AI-S....work with D70s and D50? I

know you'd have to use manual focus but will it work with aperture

priority mode or any other modes? I'd like to know before I buy...

    Thanks,

  5. OK...thanks for all of the responses...

    Cameras...Nikon D70s, and D50

Lenses, 105mm f2.8 AF Mico-Nikkor, Sigma 180mm f4 AF Macro, Sigma 300mm f2.8 AF...the 300mm would be used just to shorten the close focus ala John Shaw...

    I hope that helps!

    Thanks, George Goodroe

  6. I need a clarification...I think I understand this but I want to

    check.

With the PK series of Nikon extension rings...will they work with

the current crop of AF lenses...but just not provide AF? and will

they work in Manual and Aperture priority mode?

Also....does Nikon make an AF Extension ring that works with current

    lenses?

    Happy New Year all!

  7. Do all EL Nikkor lenses utilize a 39mm lens mount? or as they get

bigger...does the lens mount get bigger? I can't find any place on

the web that gives the information I need. I need info on the 80mm,

    105mm, 135mm and 150mm.

    Thanks and Happy New Year!

  8. A friend and I were discussing Nikon lenses and he dis-agreed with

me when I mentioned that I had seen a folding coupling yoke on a

Nikon lens...was it a Nikon or off-brand that at one point had a

folding coupling yoke on the lens? Links to pictures on the web

    would be appreciated!

    Thanks and Happy New Year!

  9. Happy New Year everyone!

Has anyone out there had any experience having to replace the

    bellows on a PB-4/6 Bellows unit...Nikon won't quote a price without

seeing the unit and I am trying to decide to buy either a very used

one that might need a repair (very cheap) or a nice one that

doesn't...how expensive the repair would be will help me decide...

    Any help appreciated...

  10. Wow...I was under the impression that you could shorten the bellows up and still use some lens combo that would give you focus to infinity...how about any lenses? Are there adapters that could go on the PB-4 that would allow use of view camera lenses that might work?

    thanks guys! George

  11. I asked questions about bellows in a post a month or so ago...

    http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00EY20&tag=

After all of those clarifications....I know I'll be using bellows

for perspective control landscape shots (not macro)...probably

leaning towards wide angle or normal..which modern Nikkor lenses

could be used on a PB-4 that would deliver wide angle or normal

    performance?

  12. Hi All,

I recently purchased a Sigma 300mm 2.8 HSM APO lens and

unfortunately, the lens did not come with instructions on how to use

the rotating ring in front of the filter holder...I read something

about the ring possibly allowing rotation of filters like

polarizers...however it doesn't rotate the filter housing...only the

    ring itself rotates...

Any ideas on exactly what it does?
