Welcome to PN. It's a great place to learn and to help others learn. You'll get out of it what you put into it.

I spent most of my childhood in Tempe and can appreciate your enthusiasm for photo opportunities in AZ. A few of my favorite places are Salt River Canyon, Canyon Lake, Superstition Mountains, & Sabino Canyon (near Tucson). I am also planning someday to shoot the stark volcanic terrain west of Phoenix. And, welcome to PN.

Welcome to PN and I agree with Mike 100%. And my first exposure to PN was also very inspirational. I await your amazing photographs.

Welcome back, Mike. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Welcome. This is a great site for all levels of expertise. I have learned a great deal since becoming a member, and enjoy this site almost every day.

Welcome to PN. There was some talk by the admin to include geographic info in our profiles, but that has not happened yet. Maybe soon? Josh?

Welcome, Jacques, to photo.net. This site is an amazing resource for all photographers and I hope you find this as well.

Welcome to PN. This site is a wonderful learning resource for amateurs and professionals alike. I'd advise trying many different options (forums, galleries, tutorials, etc.) here to discover what is most useful to you. Many members are very willing to provide advice and critiques. Best wishes - Robert

How about a lightweight travel tripod? Mine is small enough and light enough to carry every day in my backpack.

Like Robert, I prefer to read at least a short bio on the person critiquing and a few sample photos is helpful as well. But I'm solidly with Josh on this. You should not be required to post anything before being able to critique.

Knowledge of famous photographers names is important to one's own photography how?

Desert Museum, Sabino Canyon, Kitt Peak Observatory, top of "A Mountain" west of town to get sunrise/sunset on city, Davis Monthan Air Force Base to see aircraft graveyard, Mt Lemmon, Saguaro Nat'l Monument, U of A campus.

PN offers a free (if you are a paying member of PN) ImagePro site which is a very good place to start your own website. Not tremendously customizable but you can make it look professional enough. The smugmug type sites are another option, but I for one am very happy with ImagePro. I also recommend looking into marketing your work locally at galleries, restaurants, cafes, etc. It takes time, so be patient. Online stock photo sites are another option. Do a search on PN for similar topics and you will find lots of ideas, including recommendations for useful books/websites on this subject. Copyright issues are always present with online posting. Again, do a search on PN. BTW, nice portfolio.

I've had a few canvas gallery wraps done at mpix.com with very satisfying results. I usually wait for sale prices.

I agree with Neil completely and would add that your choice of font is too ordinary and/or newspaperlike. The photo tags should be much less conspicuous. As you should try to do with your photography - simplify, simplify, simplify. Help your prospective customer focus on the image, rather than on the page.

If your question is why do some photos with the requisite number of ratings not appear in the TRP, then one possible answer is that only anonymous ratings from the "Rate Recent Photos" option are used in the calculation. Any anonymous ratings received under the "Rate Category" option are not used. This applies to the TRP when the "Recent Ratings (average)" is selected in the "Sort By:" pick list, which is the default. As stated above, if you change this to "All ratings (average)" then all ratings whether anonymous or direct are used. But a minimum number of ratings is still required.

Another factor is the date the photo was loaded in PN. If the filter is set at 3 days (default) but the photo was loaded several days before, it won't appear. The 3 days applies to the date the photo was loaded, not the date the photo was submitted to the critique forum.

-

The TRP is a popularity contest, nothing more. To treat it as a serious judgment of photographic quality is silly.

I can't stop.

-

I wait for sales at Michaels and pick up cheap metal 16X20 frames for about $10.

-

Try submitting them to the Critique Forum. Check the FAQ if you're not sure how.

-

My understanding is that if the anonymous ratings were given under the Rate Category option (filter category option in the ratings queue) instead of the Rate Recent option, they will not be used in the Recent Ratings TRP calculation.

Thanks to Fred for initiating this dialogue. This has been one of the more constructive dicussions on this topic I have seen recently. He point is well taken and I will attempt to follow his suggestions although, as with many people, time is always an issue. But if we consider how much time it takes to shoot, process, upload an image to PN, and then check back later for comments, we should be able to afford a few more minutes to comment on a photo in the critique forum. I for one am aiming for a 3:1 ratio for comments given vs. critiques requested.
