Wonderfully stark photo with vivid color to balance it. I would crop the lower left corner though, where the black object is at the edge, as it pulls the eye out of the frame. You have many excellent photos, and it was hard to pick just one to comment on!

The first thing that came to my mind as well is Dali. I love his work, and I find yours quite interesting. I don't use alot of manipulations, but it's fun to see what people are able to do with Photoshop.

Hahaha. Too true. Thanks for the kind words. This is actually 5x7- I went with a bigger camera to get nice contacts. I love the contemplation of LF. People think I'm weird.
  1. You know what everybody- I know this is not a well exposed/ composed

photo (*you* try getting 3 Golden retrievers to sit still !!!!)- it's

not really here for a critique, and don't bother giving me a bunch of

3/3 ratings. I just wanted to wish a Merry Christmas (season's

greetings for non- Christian faiths) to all the people out there who

will appreciate this photo..... (well, I guess those who don't

appreciate it either... ho hum) :-) :-) :-)

Thank you both- I love shooting minimalistic pieces, as they are so challenging to make effective- leaving just the right amount in the frame to do the job (I have many very *uneffective* minimalist pieces).

Drew- I appreciate your analysis of this photo, as you have seen what I was trying to say- this makes me succesful in this photograph. This day was *so hot*, and the sky was just brilliantly blue, with such a gorgeous gradation. It reminded me of the sky in the outback of Australia when I was there years ago. I used a polarizer to ramp up the color, and placed the horizon low to add a bit of tension, and emphasize the sky. I just wished that cloud was a weeeeeee bit higher......

Yes- film noir- that's the first impression I got. I like the bold statement this photo makes. It is telling a story and I'd like to know what it is. It could be a scene in a movie with some very soft music (choose your prefered type) playing. Could be dark, could be lonely, could be a hint at an illicit tryst. I like mininmalist pieces, and I love B&W's of this type to be contrasty. Also, good choice with the square format- it keeps the frame properly balanced for this composition.

Thanks Bill- I'll see what I can do with that highlight. Poor guy started going grey early, and that spot seems to always get blown out (seen in another shot in this folder) ;-(

I've done some early (quick) prints of this photo and am still trying to figure out the correct balance- the neg is a bit thin and it's tough separating the tonal range through contrast without blowing out that highlight. If I just print it lighter, the whole thing goes flat. I haven't done any burning tests yet though- it should be a simple one to do (easier than split contrast in this neg anyway).

Thanks again for your input Bill- it's always appreciated.

Bill- great balance, great tones. The hint of the sun just beyond the horizon was a great visualization. The little black cloud and tiny white one in the upper left corner are distracting though- they pull my eye away from that great reflection. IMHO, they should be cropped or cloned out.

Very effective photo. Your composition is spot on. I think this would be more effective in B&W however- while the lighting is engaging, the yellow brown-color detracts for me. But mind you, that's just my personal taste.

Aaron- great composition and tones. Much better than your prior version. The horizon is straight, and the low placement is effective. Love the transition in the sky. Did you filter this, or create these tones when converting in PS?

Tim- thanks for your input- it gives me some ideas to play around with. I can see some real abstractions with creative crops here. This was hellishly difficult to decide on an exposure, and there was now way to get away from that darn flash of sky on the left and maintain the composition.

Thank you both for your comments. There was no post-processing done, other than to adjust levels and whatnot to represent the actual slide. I used quite a narrow depth of field to isolate the flower. This park has a sand-dune area that is teeming with these flowers. I saw this little guy all on his lonesome, and visualized this image. There was a butterfly sitting on the upper right petal for a half second, but he flew away just as I was tripping the shutter. Thanks again for your input.
