  1. If $170 is not that big a deal for you, go for D40X. In computer screen, you can zoom in more or to magnify more than D40. Couple of years down the road, you may find it easy to sell your D40X than D40 in eBay.
  2. Do you know why APS format failed?

When the picture quality between 35mm and APS is obvious but the price difference is not, APS died.

FF image is way better than DX's. As long as FF sensors cost a lot more than DX sensors, DX format will still be around. As long as the cost of tele lens is more the wide angle lens, DX will still be around. ...

I bet those 1.?X lenses (from all camera manufacturers) will be around at least 10 to 20 years. So buy what you need and can afford today. You can get the best technology with the lowest price the day before you die.

  3. Ilkka Nissila, your wrote, "The high ISO noise reduction settings affect the image if the RAW converter supports these in-camera settings. E.g. Nikon View (NX), Nikon Capture (NX) etc."

I believe ViewNX doesn't have Noise Reduction feature, while CaptureNX does. Therefore, using ViewNX to convert NEF file to JPEG won't have the Noise Reduction setting as it was in the camera. Am I right?

  4. Elliot, you confused me.

    (1) You wrote, "There is no noise reduction in NX."

Do you mean ViewNX or Capture NX?

    (2) You wrote, "In fact, they removed some of the basic editing features that the original Nikon View had."

Do you mean that NikonView has the best features?

  5. I don't believe Nikon intentionally makes inferior products in Thailand. What is the purpose: To trash foreign countries or to trash its own brand. I believe Nikon moves lower margin products to other countries to cut cost. When a product's margin goes down because of competition, Nikon uses less durable components to cut cost. Because of that, products made in Japan are normally better quality and higher margin products.
  6. I shot some photos in NEF + JPEG files. I then played around one or two photos

using the trial Nikon Capture NV 1.1. I left the SD card in a card reader

attached to USB port of my PC. Couple of days later, all photos disappeared.

DCIM folder is there but nothing inside.

There are 2 other folders. One with no name. One with the name of "ure NX 1..1"

The top directory has some junk files. Some of them are 1 to 2 MB
