Pro level mechanical cameras always have replacement parts so that
pros can repair their equipments and continue using them.
Manufacturers know that the pros are willing to pay the replacement
parts. Manufacturers are happy to supply replacement parts.
Pro level digital ........ will not have .........................
.........................................................
Manufacturers .................. are not willing ..................
...... ............. are not happy ........................
Because the pros, like you, don't want to spend the money to repair your yesteryear digital cameras. It is all market-driven economy.

If you choose between EOS-300D and D70, you are not choosing the best from either camp. That's fine as you can choose the worst from each camp. When you next pictures come out terrible, you can blame it on the camera.

Can or will your wife and kids share your burden to carry the camera(s), lenses, flash, films around? If yes, bring all your equipments. If not, bring a good point-and-shoot camera.

Ho Ho Ho ...
Santa dropped off a Digital Rebel to you but forgot to leave you an instruction video. It's OK. Set the camera in Auto mode and start shooting. Gradually you mess around the control buttons, one at a time. Take notes in a notebook. Gradually you know how to use it. Don't forget to find a young good looking chick as your model but have to consult with your cardiologist first.

"rival prints from Nikkor 85/1.4 or 180/2.8 primes"
I notice a lot of people remove their eyeglasses before they examined photos.
However, Nikkor 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF IF ED Macro is a very convinence one-size-fit-all zoom lens. Sometimes it is better to do lots of things not-perfectly than to do none perfect.
-
Carry a not-perfect camera everywhere is better than leaving a perfect camera home. Sometimes it is a good excuse not to bring a camera along because of the lenses needed. A single wide-range zoom lens does give yourself a pleasureable and relax vacation/trip. Pro-1's sensor is always in its top performance because it has no lens to swap and the sensor is always perfectly clean.

Richard Cochran wrote: Zoom lens design is easier for smaller low-res formats. A 10X zoom is not unusual for a digicam with a small sensor, or for a TV or movie camera with low resolution and a smaller format. For a full-frame 35mm, a 10x zoom lens would be distortion-prone, big, expensive, and the end result pictures would be not much better than the pictures you get with the Coolpix.
-------
Yes, it is easier to design a 10X zoom lens for a low resolution sensor, but Coolpix 8800 is not a low resolution sensor. It has 8MP. For a small sensor camera, the burden is even heavier on the lens. It will be harder to design a 10X zoom lens for a high pixel, small sensor camera.

Which Canon Zoom lens has the widest range? To use it in EOS 300D
(Digital Rebel), is it better than Canon digicam PowerShot Pro-1?
-
Which one is Nikkor's widest range zoom lens? Why Nikkor doesn't make
SLR zoom lens as wide range as it does for Coolpix 8800 (10X)? I
prefer to carry only one zoom lens for vacation/trip.

There are some inexpensive light-weight Canon zoom lenses in the
market. The barrels are plastice. How about the lens elements? Are
they made from optical glass or some sort of plastic (polycarbonate)?
-
Which flash in the market is suitable for Coolpix 5700/8700/8800/8400
... camera? Can they do D-TTL, i-TTL?
-
They are about the same price. Without brand loyalty, which one would
you prefer?

Andy, what prompt you to buy Nikon Coolpix 8700 but not Canon EOS 300D (Digital Rebel)? They are about the same price. -
Nikon is a very honest company, and it will honor your rebate as long as you can read the serial number.

I have several brands of filters on hand. Could you help me to rank
their quality?
Nikon, Hoya, Tiffen, Rolev, Fotoace.
What other brands of filters are normally considered great quality?

When people made the show "SpongeBob SquarePants", they used square CCD or CMOS sensors.

What brand is the Kit Lens?
Any substitute for the CR123?
