OCP, I used D40 for 8 months. Since D40's images are so clean at ISO-200 that Nikon set the minimum ISO 200. It gives up better low-light performance. But you miss the chance to wide-open your lens to make the DOF shallow. Multiple AF points is quite useful in some cases. That makes Nikon to sell you D80. If your only purpose is to have a tiny portable DSLR, 70-300 VR defeats your purpose. Otherwise, it is OK. The grip comfort level depends on your hands only. Why don't you try it out in a retail store?

Also, it seems that all new Nikkor will be AF-S for fast focusing.
-
D-Lighting feature is software upgradeable. But I doubt Nikon wants to upgrade this feature to D200 because it will be replaced by D300 soon. And Nikon wants something to lure D200 owners to upgrade.
-
I guess the next battle ground will be low-light performance, not pixel count.
In the future, we can save quite a lot without rely on fast lens, except for Depth Of Field purpose.
-
Mark, I have never used D3 nor EOS-1D Mark III. That is why I want to compare.
-
Do you know its low-light performance compared to Canon EOS-1D Mark III?

Is there anyway I can find out how many clicks/photos a Nikon camera has been
taken?

Why some Nikon lenses have the brand "Nikkor", some don't?

Contact Nikon. This is the most easiest way.

I google & yahoo around and gain some knowledges and to share with ya! These also explains that why D40X is $150 ~ $200 more than D40, although with slower Flash X-Sync.

Robert, I am not comparing D40 to D40X, in which D40 uses electronic shutter while D40X uses mechanical shutter. I try to understand the benefit of mechanical shutters. It seems to me that high end products use mechanical shutters but with slower Flash X-Sync. If electonic shutters can achieve faster Flash X-Sync, why manufacturers don't use electronic shutters (less reliability problems) in all high-end products.

What is consider good?
It seems that higher end products have slower speed, such as 1/250, while lower
end products have faster speed, such as 1/500.

Is Amazon.com a Nikon Authorized Dealer? Are Nikons from them come with USA
warranty?

m rose, I don't really care what others have and don't have. Those use "snob value" have more value to show, but I have lighter baggage to haul. On the other hand, P&S people laugh at our more than 3-lb baggages.

Shun, I just ordered the one you bought: Understanding DSLR Photography, right after your post. Hey, I thought you wrote one time that you would switch to Canon if you didn't have a lot of Nikon gears already. But you still "poison" your sister-in-law with Nikon School DVD. J/K.
I think Nikon's product line is catching up with Canon rapidly lately. Since I am not a professional photographer, and I like Nikon's plastic material, and I like Nikon flash, therefore I am still a Nikonian.

Like us, flash memory cards start to forgetting things as they age.

Will I hit the glass resolution limitation when I increase the f-number to get
greater depth-of-field? How much is too much? Is there any rule-of-thumb?

Eric, you don't understand. I never said that D40X is better picture quality than D40. I said that if you don't mind to spend $100 more for a little extra pixel, D40X is the way to go because it has more crop capability.
Yes, there are lots of suckers think megapixels are their primary criteria for camera quality. If you're smart, you know how to go with the majority sucker world. When manufacturers are phasing out 6MP DSLRs, your 6MP DSLR will have no place in eBay 2-3 years later when you want to upgrade.
-
I pick D40X over D40 because I can have more pixels, around 60% ~ 70%. It is like 60% ~ 70% larger tele zoom. When I upgrade my D40X, I will collect $100 more than if I have D40. I actually spend $50 ~ $100 more in 1 ~ 2 years. It is not barely enough to take your wife or two [wives] to a dinner.

If you don't care about the AF-S, dial, ... D40 gives better images than D50, D70. D40X gives better images than D80, D200. In-camera processing and high ISO processing really improves a lot lately. D40X costs you $150 more but gives you extra 4MP, 0.5 frame/second, full-frame transfer (mechanical shutter) instead of interlink transfer (electronic shutter). Otherwise, D40 and D40X are the same.
Look at the new Nikon offers, Nikon DSLRs is moving towards war on high ISO performance instead of pixel counts. I assume Canon etc. are going to the same direction.
