    Explorative indeed.

You are doing something new and risking a chance for a beautiful and colourful photo. But I like the B&W version, it's different.

I don't know whether it's possible or not - but when I look at the picture, I was thinking something like a little bit more of contrast (without spoiling the picture), is it possible? Or maybe it's the white frame that gives me the feeling. Maybe the picture will have stronger impact on black frame.

This is interesting. I like this kind of photo, but I wish I could see a little bit more details of the grass and other vegetations. Do you have a version of this taken in the afternoon or early morning?

    Toilet Series #3

Byron: Thanks for the comments, what originally caught me to make a picture was: first, the toilet was so clean I didn't hesitate to pull out my camera, second, the lining urinals and the overall colour tone of the toilet, and I figured out the lights on top can also be used to support the composition of the urinals.

I actually have a few shots that combine lining white urinals and white overall room with a red toilet door, it made a strong contrast, but unfortunately I don't like any of the shots I took that include the red door. Maybe next time.

I agree, the strength of this picture is the facial expression. It's natural and very relaxed. If I had to pick something, I think it would be the girl and the background seem too blended together.

But it's a beautiful portrait regardless.

  1. Black and white is a perfect choice for this picture. The pattern combined with the contrast difference of the B&W really make this a strong image. Colours would have lessen the impact of the picture.

No, no hidden message around this picture. Just making some composition works here.

The toilet was clean indeed though. Or else I wouldn't pulled out my cam era and started shooting.

Slightly out of topic, you do realise that in order for a picture to be meaningful, it doesn't have to be too staged and too obvious for the viewer to see, don't you?

If you find this picture boring, I think you and me really have different perspective of what a good picture is. Based from your pictures, seem like you like to communicate using your picture in a more obvious way, but me, I like the viewers to understand it and get the meaning by looking at it more carefully.

But for this one, it's just a compositional work, nothing more than that.

But anyway, I think we have a totally different taste in photography (just like paintings), this picture to me is far from boring, but since you seem like not to be able to understand/appreciate it at all, that says a lot to your understanding (or taste) of the picture.

    Katie,

Thanks for the comments. After I took the shot and examined it at home, I just realised that the toilet area is not constructed straight, but quite curvy. You can tell from the angle of the tiles and the bottom black liners.

At first I thought it was a lens distortion, but turned out that it's not a distortion but it was actually not straight (you can also tell from the urinal on the right is not facing to the same direction as the left one).

But I don't think it distract that much from the image (well, it's originally like that anyway, can't do much about it).

I added a bit of noise to add a little bit of feel to the picture.

My favourite one is probably the third one, and then second and first one.

    Lakeland track

I like this one a lot, although maybe I prefer if the upper road (that's road I think?) is made horizontal. But if to do so you have to sacrifice the river (either the land or the river is cut), then maybe I'd prefer it as it is - because I don't think you can cut any more of the lower part of the picture.

Yes indeed. It tells a story, I think that's the whole idea about street photography. I don't what how you (or other viewers) think when looking at this image. But for me it shows the "feeling" of the mannequins looking at people (couple) passing by and wish they had the freedom to do so.

    My Nose

I have to say eyes, only because the colour-contrast of the particular dog.

In that picture, the dog's overall colour is all black, therefore even though the nearest point to the viewer is the nose, but the white part of the eye draws the most attention (my picture got different colour combination). Maybe with shallower DOF, I won't be so drawn into the eyes. Actually the focus in that picture is more in between of eyes and the part behind the nose.

There is no set rule in photography that explains what DOF or what angle will give you what. It really depends on the particular picture itself. There are many aspects that contributes to how you see the picture: the colours, the crop, the object, even to things like the borders.

My point is, in this particular case, depending on how it is composed, the picture can either give the viewer:

    1. You see it, and then you wanna explore the picture.

    2. You see it, and that's it.

If I made my picture with deeper DOF, I think it would turn the picture into category 2. The fact of the sort of "even" colour combination (white/black/white/black with almost even proportion) in my picture makes it needing a shallow DOF.

It is hard to explain without giving you two exact pictures taken with different DOF, but unfortunately that's the only picture I have.
