This is a really interesting shot. I'd like to see a person standing in the middle of it to give me a sense of scale. Otherwise, it's great.

The photo of the week selection always draws a lot of sycophantic drooling. But this is over

the top. "Jaw dropping?" I'm sorry. It's a picture of four sticks. It's not even a very interesting

picture of four sticks.

I like it that way. All too often, the temptation with warmish colored landscapes is to polarize the heck out of them and make them unnaturally orange. The slightly the cooler wash and the somewhat faded colors at the top give this photo a kind of sincerity that I like.

This is a nice portrait. I like the way the lines on the scarf fall away from the woman's face. Everything in the photo, from those lines, to her nose, points more or less down, which gives the picture an odd, kind of sad feel. Also, I really like the way the hard line of the scarf frames the woman's face. Very classy.

 

Unfortunately -- and this is a killer -- those highlights near the eye are really painful. Maybe you can do something in Photoshop or whatever to tone them down. Another option might be to diffuse the flash a little the next time you take a picture like this.

 

Don't get me wrong: I think harsh highlights can work. Look at Weegee's work, for instance. But the subject matter in this shot is soft and would lend itself well to some equally soft lighting.

You're on to something with the barbed wire, the cross, and the cool pallette. What weakens this picture, I think, is the incredibly contrasty light. Shooting a little later in the afternoon or earlier in the morning might have made it a bit better. Keep up the good work!
