  1. The real Toledo, not "Ohio" or "Holy Toledo!", though this image, of course, is Holy and is, perhaps the origin of the expression. Holy Toledo!
  2. Yes, good old Monument Valley, the scene of "Stagecoach". The travelers pretty much circled their wagons around this picturesque valley the entire picture. How they got West doing that, of course, is interred with John Ford.
  3. The large version is nice. It seems a bit titled to the left. Perhaps, a 1% rotation to the right?

    Untitled

The composition works well here, but I wonder if it would not be stronger if the curve started on the lower left corner.

    Dark Alley

It's a sharp lens in a bright sunlight, so the sharpness is there. The emotions are also present in the face of the young man, and in the attitude of the female. Nice work, Vlad.

    Haunted Youth

As Wouter points out, he is more haunting than haunted, though HE wouldn't know it because he has no mirror.
  7. The white lines got me, Jack. There is compositional symmetry existing in nature. The artist SEES it.
  8. Food for thought...but, then, just about every one of your pictures is.
  9. Beautiful work, Leslie. Is it edible?

    Keyhole

Love Mike Lipakis' attempt (always great when someone takes the time), but there is something REAL about the original, especially in keeping with the title, that makes me prefer its unfettered essence.
  11. The quote makes me blush. One of the greatest short stories of all time by one of the greatest masters of that genre. Glad you can dig the association.

  13. "Oh! then listen. About sixty years ago, my grandmother went to Paris, where she created quite a sensation. People used to run after her to catch a glimpse of the 'Muscovite Venus.' Richelieu made love to her, and my grandmother maintains that he almost blew out his brains in consequence of her cruelty....The old Countess A---- was seated in her dressing-room in front of her looking--glass. Three waiting maids stood around her. One held a small pot of rouge, another a box of hair-pins, and the third a tall can with bright red ribbons. The Countess had no longer the slightest pretensions to beauty, but she still preserved the habits of her youth, dressed in strict accordance with the fashion of seventy years before, and made as long and as careful a toilette as she would have done sixty years previously.
