I had wanted to go out this past Sunday to my old haunt, the gardens at Saint Paschal Baylon Catholic Church atop the Oakland Hills, a stone's throw from my home. But, I got off too late due to the fact the wife and I were watching another of her endless series of British mysteries, this one with an old jaded Diana Rigg as a tart, jaded divorcee detective with an acerbic wit and, quite frankly, a streak of unbecoming misogyny; but, hey. At the end of it, I finally unwound myself from the couch, and grabbing my camera, headed up the hill. The boys came with me and tried to play on the wet playground before the wind and the cold and the darkness drove them back to the car where they gorged on Minecraft and whatever else the heck they enjoy on my phone. I buried myself on the flowers, armed with my reincarnated Micro Nikkor 55mm 3.5, an amazing lens adapted to my Canon 5ds. The sun had set behind the trees and focusing this lens and stopping it down after focusing was a challenge. But, I have to say I liked the result in this picture. After a half hour of so of puttering around in the almost darkness, I packed it it and called it a night. As usual, thanks for your time.

There is something about this image that immediately grabs you, and that is something universal in all great art. On the surface, it looks like a ho hum portrait of two elderly people, the sort of image one takes because "it looks photogenic". But, there is something about this picture, the attitude of the couple, the closeness of their chairs--like they cannot hear each other if they are further apart. The black and white accentuates that similarity by removing distracting color from the scene. This allows you to look closer at their faces, the set of their jaws in the same way, the resigned look on BOTH faces, and the sense of vulnerability that is palpable in their faces, though they both try to present a fortified front. It is an image that is once reassuring that they have both gone a long way together, and at the same time sad because they will not be on that journey together much longer.
