Tomasz, I think the portrait pose is really nice. I am distracted though by the out of focus greenery and what appears to be reflections in glass? Was this in a zoo perhaps? just wondering.

I am happy with it as it is. I would love to try this with the wolf face on to me too. thanks again for the comments

Really nice colours and nice idea. The lines do have a little wobble on them. If you wanted straight lines (and you may not have), you could use a tripod to help steady the camera during the zoom. I like the mix of thin and wide lines and the position of the centre.

Thanks for the comments. I wonder what you think of the lighting? I wondered whether fill flash would have helped especially for the eyes but for me at least, the highlights show the hackles raised and focus on the muzzle and teeth being bared. Any thoughts?

thanks for the kind comments. How did i do this? Well i had little miss riding hood parade in front of the wolf and let nature take its course. Ok, seriously there was a second wolf and this was a warning to keep away.
  1. Hi Cyrus, nice photo. good colours and great expression. I was toying with whether it would be better to have the leaf level but i dont think so. Having the frog high in the frame and tilted adds to the effect. The frog seems smug and cheeky
  2. Thanks Laurie, a difficult situation with strong sunlight coming between the buildings. In this and the other photo of a girl in the parade, I tried to use the lighting to my advantage. I think she was tired and wanted to go home. too much excitement for one day.

Laurie, please take or leave my comments as i dont have much experience with this genre. I like the lines created by the pose and the shadows and highlights. Two things though, firstly the eyebrows being cut off bother me for some reason; secondly i am not sure what emotion she is portraying. Perhaps a neutral face to draw attention to the lines and tones? would be interested to learn more. thanks

Jana, thanks for the comment. You are right of course. This probably shouldnt be up here. It was more of a test shot as are the other flower pics. Its my mothers garden back in ireland and she wanted some photos but flowers are not something i usually photograph. Now i look at it again i am wondering what it would look like as a closeup of the center. just a thought. thanks again
  3. Thanks Walter. This was taken a while ago. I think the thing that bothers me most are the out of focus reflections from water in the background. This is a swamp and heavily wooded with shafts of light coming through the canopy. Thinking about your comment, perhaps if i move around more to use the moss more completely as a background that might help. Worth trying again this spring. thanks again.
  4. thanks Guy, yes i did use the figures for perspective. These were "found figues" as opposed to the "bring your own along" who often protest at being stuck in strange places for perspective. I didnt have much time there just an evening. I think the proper light would have been dawn, lighting up the rock. Probably would have more impact then.
  5. 'o'ncilla, thanks for the explanation. I too have photos like that - ones i started out with or mean something to me even if technically imperfect. I am thinking of either putting them in a folder marked not for critique or putting an explanation on the photo. Its good at least for me to finally get some good feedback. best of luck

Thanks Laurie, your point is well taken re position. I will crop to allow for more space on the bottom. As for the hole, i do not touch up my animal photos since i think the flaws add to the character and individuality of the animal as they do for people.

Walter, really like this. my eye is drawn in to the sharpness and brightness in the bottom right and then drawn down the rails into the distance. I really like your use of lines in your photos.
  6. hi 'o'ncilla, i too am not sure what to make of it. I thought from the thumbnail that it was a watercolour effect. When i see it full size it feels too saturated and "in your face" to fit with the title. Maybe that was the point? I would be interested to hear what you wanted to communicate here. thanks Barry

Thanks for the comments. Ben, it was a bit of both. Overcast day and in getting the details optimal in the bat any trace of sky was eliminated. If I had more photoshop skills, perhaps i could selectively boost the detail on the bat. Only bare trees in the other direction so nothing to give me a nice background. I will be back to that spot once the weather warms up and he is more active and try for a better background. thanks for the comment. Barry
  7. George,

Not quite as bright and detailed as Marks' version but i dont know how he did that. Perhaps some fill flash would have helped at the time? Really great pose in a great environment. nothing better than a great display of feathers like this. all the best.

    Darren,

really nice. Very sharp and detailed with a nice head turn. Two minor things: the bird feels slightly too high in the frame. I think its because my eye is drawn to the head first which is the highest point. Second, there is a dust mark on the top right you can easily clone out.
