I think I see a new trend in some newspaper photos in the New York Times and the Boston Globe. Certain color photos look as if they were hand colored, like the old colored postcard which were made from B&W photos which were sent to Germany for hand coloring and printing.. I don't think its printing issue because they also look odd on my computer screen. Has anyone else noticed this on other papers?
Or maybe my eyes are failing.

Back in the day I would take two week trips to Europe with four or five rolls of Kodachrome and mail them back to Rochester as I went. At 1/250 sec. for most photos (and no batteries to charge) that left a lot of time for looking. And most of the slides would be waiting for me when I got home. Different times.

I also was persuaded that RAW was the only way to go with digital, even though a simple conversion is my usual post processing but reading this thread and considering that I have no other options with my cell phone photography leads me to consider trying jpeg with my digital camera as well. However I'll skip the sushi.

I currently own two Solinettes, one Apotar and one Solinar, both with stuck focussing that I have to get into some day. Solinettes were also marketed in the US as Ansco Regents. Small folding cameras were always my favorites, my main camera for years was a Kodak Retina IIa.

I agree with Fred G. If you're traveling with non photographers snap what you can and enjoy the group company. You should enjoy the scenery even if you don't get an opportunity to photograph it. I travel with a fixed lens camera and hope for the best.

Most of my photography at that time involved hiking, skiing or travel and I couldn't imagine standing on a ski trail, a mountain trail, or a street corner waving a damp print waiting for it to dry so Polaroid didn't interest me. Years later I worked for Polaroid on another doomed project.

Mention of an exhaust system reminds me of my long go darkroom. I found that with an exhaust system you don't know where the air its getting into the the darkroom, probably under the door and through various cracks, all sources of dust. So I change it to a single port inlet system which I could easily filter and all my dust problems disappeared

Nickel plate was common before chrome. Did Leica ever nickel plate?

If you want to be able to develop reversible film at some future time and you opt for a plastic tank/reel make sure one flange of the reel is transparent for flashing the film to light. The stainless reels look open enough for that purpose.

Buying a 35mm Retina and my first roll of Kodachrome ended my darkroom days abruptly.

You should check battery availability for any film camera that uses one.

Back when, I had two Cannot 1.7QL's, both of which were dogs and a Cannot 28 which was a gem. I wanted to try the Petri but never found one on Ebay when I looked. Eventually settled on an Olympus Pen D which was also a gem until it died. I still have the pieces in a box.

I spent a week in Santa Fe a few years ago and enjoyed it very much. Lots of good photo ops in town and within a day's trip. Taos is nearby and Monument Valley should be possible although I didn't make that trip. Use the good days for trvel and walk around Santa Fe other days.

Rick, my Retina IIa has a crank like the one in this -

engraved Retina IIa and has the same small recess formed in the top plate for the small round end of the
crank as shown in the picture.

Settling on a photographic medium is like choosing a spouse. You find one you like and get comfortable
with it. Although you may still see why others may be suitable for other people. After my first roll of
Kodachrome I never looked back.

Public libraries usually have a section on photography, I believe the Dewey decimal system code is
978point something. If you go browse into their book stacks you can usually find the pertinent info you
need. Also the magazine section may carry current and recent issues of photo magazines.

Image sharpness is also affected by shutter speed as well as depth of field. The larger the viewed image
the more obvious camera shake and out of focus areas become. When I used slide film I tried to set 1/250
second whenever possible and then used whatever aperture resulted. Out of focus only affects some of
the image, camera shake affects the whole image.

Can you differentiate between first visits and repeat visits? People who have never used film might be
paying a one time visit but people with a serious preference for film might be making repeat visits.

For years I used a 35m camera with a fixed 50mm lens and the convenience outweighed any missed
shots. I was content to look and move on. Now I have come to like and use a wider angle, a 35mm or
28mm equivalent. Still I see some shots that another lens might be be needed but I am content to take
what i can and otherwise just look and move on.

Cell phones with cameras are so plentiful and provide instant results that carrying another gadget that may
take weeks to take 40 images and then days to see results does not sound very marketable.

I have several older film cameras that I got from EBay and I hope to repair them as needed and resell to
some one who would appreciate them and to reduce clutter on my shelves. But there are one or two i
would like to keep.

I have been thinking of making some prints of digital camera photos and scanned Kodachrome slides to
hang in the bedroom but am tempted to get them done commercially.
