Personally, I've always turned the camera off for no other reason than it'd be stupid to leave it on while changing lenses. That--and the off chance I'd screw something up.

I'm an Uncle John, and I can assure you, nobody in the family (including my own kid!) has been knocking my door down to shoot weddings or special occasions--and I'm completely ok with that. I've done a four-gen photo and a family Christmas party for close friends and simply told them I'd do the best that I could. They paid me far more than I was worth, but they appreciated the time and effort. That said, I've always encouraged people to get a pro when dealing with weddings. I'll stick to ball games.

This is a subject that has been a sore spot with a lot of people for a long time. I had a portfolio, but removed it simply because I never knew what people thought about the pictures I was posting for critique. Ratings don't tell the whole story. The 'originality' category should be done away with altogether and should be replaced with 'interpretation'. I mean, how original is a sunset? How one renders the sunset photographically is what matters. If there's going to be a 'for critique' gallery, then by God, find some way to force people to leave a critique or comment and not leave a 'drive-by' rating. Or else subdivide the gallery categories into professionals, amateurs, and beginners so that the elitists can stick to their own group, and the rest of us can get the honest critique and guidance we need. Better yet, do away with the whole rating system, because it is obviously flawed. JMHO.

" prohibits adults from entering unless they are accompanied by children."
Remember when it was exactly the opposite?

Jim, I've bookmarked your blog. I might learn something. I used to have a portfolio on PN, but after recieving next to no views or comments, I gave up. I still like to look around though.

I find myself in 'camera mode' a lot. The trouble is actually turning what I see into a good photograph.

Missed my son's entire h.s. graduation party because I didn't extend the film far enough for the sprockets to advance it.

Hong Kong, although it was years ago and I had no interest in photography at the time.

"Gone Postal" unfortunately, has become a catch phrase because of several incidents of USPS employees committing violent acts upon their fellow employees. As a former USPS worker, I got used to the term, although it's a sensitive issue with all who work for the USPS. People now use it as a flippant remark. On the other side of the coin, how would you feel if people started using the phrase "gone Collumbine"? Would you be outraged? The number of incidents of school shootings far outweighs acts of violence among postal workers. Such phrases do nobody any good. It's time to eradicate "gone postal" and the like from our lexicon. As for the "postal workers on break", and "as opposed to working", whether you meant them as joke or not, is a little stupid to say the least. Every worker, postal or not, deserves their break. It's like cops and donut jokes. Rant over ;-)

Personally, I've found a solution to the 'views', 'ratings', 'request critique' and all that. I have discovered that nobody cares to critique or comment other than a few who took part in FIVE. To all of them I am grateful for their comments. I gave up worrying about ratings a long time ago. I just deleted my portfolio. Who needs the aggravation? I'll be back when I think I'm 'worthy'. ;-)

Steve, I'm downloading to the computer at 300, and after adjusting in software resizing to 72. I seem to still get the jaggies at 300, though. I'm going to work with that program to see if there's a way to anti-alias. It appears to only work with selected objects.

Thank you. Unfortunately I'm stuck with Win98 and neither runs with it. ;-(

Thanks for the answer. I have the problem when resizing for the web. Nothing seems to work.
