  1. Anyone out there know which nFD 35mm is the sharper of the two. I want the nFD due to the smaller size, will be using it with an adapter on an EOS M5/6. I understand the best of the series is the SSC version, but it seems unbalanced on the M series cameras. Thanks in advance. JD
  2. Nice image...thanks for your input. I had the FD 35mm f/2 when I shot film and loved it. If the optical design is the same I'm sure I'd be happy. I just feel the EF 35mm f/2 IS is too big, especially on my M-5/3. JD
  3. To further confuse the issue, anyone compared the EF 35mm f/2 to the FDn 35mm f/2? I know...too much time on my hands! ;) JD
  4. Hi All, Has anyone done any comparisons of the FDn 35mm f/2 against the current crop of Chinese 35mm manual lenses (Neewer, Meike, 7 Artisans et al)? I'd be using the lens on and EOS M5/M3. I think I've been bitten by the vintage/manual focus bug. :( JD
  5. I used Rapid Omegas and Omegaflexes (remember them?) for several years and never had the problem shown above. Other issues on occasion but never any problems with uneven take up. Overall they were pretty reliable, and I was using them daily. Excellent lenses as well. I'd second JDMvW's response. JD
  6. OK, I've got the lens, it's in great shape. Better, in my estimation, than the seller indicated. I'm very pleased. Mechanically it's superb. Super smooth helical, clean aperture blades, everything you could hope for. It fits the adapter I bought like a glove, which then fits smoothly unto the Mirex tilt/shift adapter. But it's been raining like crazy and other than a couple of shots of my bookshelf I haven't been able to really test it out. Thanks to both of you for your insights. I assumed being a Russian optic that quality control would be at best...lax! But, at $40 I figured it'd be worth a gamble. I'll keep you posted. JD
  7. You aren't by any chance testing with Polaroid or Fuji instant film are you? JD
  8. The ground glass focusing has to be accurate, unless you're using film holders that are not designed for the Horseman. So let me know which film back you're using and we'll try to figure this out. The Horseman 980/VH/VHR cameras are great cameras with a stellar lens set. Be patient, it'll be worth it once you get this sorted. Are you using the correct infinity stops? They are color coded if I remember correctly. There's a colored dot on the shutter or lens board that corresponds to the proper infinity stop. Although if, as you suspect, they've been moved you'll have issues like the ones you're experiencing. Is the ground glass focusing panel not properly seated? That will also throw your focus off. JD
  9. OK...anyone had a chance to compare the Volna-3 80mm f/2.8 to the Mamiya 645 80mm f/2.8n? I'll be using one or the other on a Mirex tilt/shift adapter on an EOS 5D Mk III. I'm currently using Mamiya 35mm, 45mm and 55mm lenses on the adapter with nice results but haven't found a direct comparison of the Pentacon and Mamiya glass. Thanks in advance... JD
  10. BeBu, Thanks for the suggestion, it was one of my options, and the one I'm leaning towards. JD
  11. That's an excellent question...the answer is obviously...yes. But FD lenses don't work as well as Nikon lenses when adapted to EOS bodies due to the body depth. The Nikkor Micro Nikkor is just one of the options I'm investigating. I really appreciate all of you who took the time to educate me! Thanks, JD
  12. Hey all you Nikon folks, can you help out someone whose last Nikon was a Nikonos III? I'm setting up to digitize a ton of slides and my Canon 100mm macro is a bit heavy and unwieldy for this application. So I'm thinking to adapt a 55mm Micro Nikkor, easily done but which 55mm? F/3.5, f/2.8, pre-AIS, or are the later AIS versions better than the older ones. Obviously all questions that most of you will have answers to...but I'm totally clueless! Take pity on an old man won't you? JD
  13. You might also want to check on the coverage. If I remember correctly this lens doesn't cover 4x5. Could be wrong though, it's been a while since I've seen one. JD
  14. FYI...the term would be 4x5 large format lens. Not full format. I think for plate cameras it was either full plate or half plate. I'm sure that someone will educate us both on the proper terminology. JD
  15. Presumably you have a dark slide inserted? Just a thought. JD
  16. Does it always occur with the same film magazine, or is it with all of your magazines? Looks like the film might not be flat for the whole exposure. Are you getting the film under the side rails on both sides? If you only have the one film magazine I'd rent/borrow/buy another and see if the problem is universal. That is definitely weird though. JD
  17. Is the Thorium FD 35mm f/2 considered the "pick of the litter"? I know there's several models of that lens in FD mount, I had one a hundred years ago when I shot with a Canon F-1 but I don't remember which version. I do remember thinking it was pretty damn good. JD
  18. I think you might be wrong...I'm using an EOS M5. Mounting FD lenses isn't an issue as the adapter doesn't require optics. Also the camera has focus peaking so focusing is not a problem. Is there another issue that I'm not aware of? I know that mounting FD lenses on a Canon DSLR is problematic but are there other issues with M cameras that I should know about? Thanks for the reply... JD
  19. Explains itself I think... Anyone ever made a comparison of the FD 35mm f/2 (any of them) to the EF 35mm f/2 (non IS)? Thinking of one or the other for an EOS M-5. Thanks, JD

  21. Hi All, Anyone out there have experience with the 80mm f/2.8 versus the 80mm f/4 macro Mamiya lenses? I'm actually using them on an EOS digital camera with a tilt/shift adapter mostly for landscape/architecture. So either f/2.8 or f/4 is workable, just interested in the sharpest lens at f/8 to f/11. Surprisingly, I'm finding that there isn't all that much difference in the used prices and the macro feature is intriguing. Thanks in advance, JD
