X2, I have the same setup and never knew what sharp was until this combo.

When I had my D4 I used the USB cable to d/l my images. I do the same with my D850. Not a fan of popping cards in and out all the time.

No worries about the drop in mp. The big thing for me was the camera size when using large lenses. I thought no big deal but it kind of was. I was able to sell mine and picked up a used D850 for only $150 more than I sold my D4. So much easier carry all day.

Great lens, I had the f3.5 version and was always pleased. Light weight and sharp. That said I picked up a Ziess Marko-Planar 100mm f2. That on my d850 is magical.

Weight aside, the sigma's build quality and lower price would make it my choice.

The thing that bothers me is no support for D series lenses, only g series. That will be the hurtle for a lot of Nikon users. We do not all use g lenses.

Michael, Thanks for this post. I had this happen on my d4 only when using my Nikon 85mm f1.8g lens. In my case I bent the lever in the camera box forward a bit. No more dark viewfinder.

I can tell you now that you'll appreciate the extra working distance from the 180mm, but I'd buy the less expensive of the two. I just picked up the Tamron 180mm non OS and really like it. I also have the Tamron 90mm VC lens.

I don't own either, but do own the Nikon 105mm f2 DC. From a build stand point I'd buy the sigma. And the image quality is great plus it cost less than the Nikon version.

Check to see what for white balance is set to. It is set to auto by default.

The D8xx series camera are geared towards landscape/portrait type work, that said they can do so much more due to the high pixel count. If you want to venture into either then I'd say buy one. If you want a great portrait camera then look at a D700, only 12mp but love the colors. HTH.

Might I suggest the nikon 28-80mm f3.3-5.6 + your 50mm or a 24mm flavor lens. I'd buy one as the are cheap and give it a try at your local garden and take some shot you plan on your trip.

<p>I think expectations need to be set. I've heard that the main different between the D7100 (which I own) and the D810 (which I do NOT own) are the cropping ability and better AF in the D810. I've also heard that the D7100 has about 90% of what the D810 has minus the two I listed. <br> <br />Might I suggest if you like the IQ coming out of your D7100, try applying the same settings to your D810 if you've not already done so. <p>I'm looking at a mid range zoom. I do miss the 24-105mm from my old Minolta Maxxum 5 & 7 days (sharp and versatile range) and now looking at both the Nikon and Sigma offerings. <p>I do the same thing when shooting the 55mm f1.2 wide open, a few mm of movement can cause you to be out of focus. From f2 on it's not as big a deal (at least for me). But it is a bit tricky wide open.</p>

My thoughts exactly. The 35mm is the FX version. Most shot wide open.

The 55mm is becoming my favorite lens.

It's a shame that nikon has a history of releasing new camera's with issues like the d200/d800/d800e/d750 just to name a few. I recently upgraded and bought a used d800 with low shutter count for a great price. I knew about the left focus issue and test the best I knew how and lucky it doesn't appear to be effected. I was looking at a d750 but after that recall I said no. Especially the cost when you buy them new. I'd keep bugging them
