I have changed the desk lamp on this image from the hoot at the

other night, and I tried a different pose. Sorry for the shallow

depth of field, I dont have a strong flash. Do you find this image

good enough for include in her portfolio? Hoe can I improve it?

Petteri's so called "finn-bounce" Its basically a cartboard with aluminum foil wrapped around it, bent in half at 45 degrees and stuck in fron to f 10D's internal flash. Bounced back at the sidewall.

Poor mans softbox :) No external flash was used...

I want to buy some flash, and as soon as I gather enough I will set up a simple home studio in the basement. Until that I have to do it the "hard way". Fast lens, high iso, and desk lamps.. I would like to make a portfolio for her. I appreciate your critique as it helps me to improve my technique. So far I am happy to experiment with LIGHTS, but dont have enough cash for a pro setup...

This image is of a teenage girl, who is very photogenic in my

opinion. she does have a look which makes her look much mature in

the photos.. I tried to capture that "untouchable" look. Let me know

    what you think

    Thx

  1. Truly a great street photo. Without the water bottle it could have been shot in the 1800's! Love the colors, the texture, even the old mans strangely courious smile...It really tells a story, as it should... Congrats

it was shot at an abandoned old quarry office in HUNGARY.... I was

suprised the ttl in camera metering did such a good job that even

some details remained in the highlighted area also. I could have

empahsized the photo solely on the heater, but I tried to include

    the whole setting...

I know. It is kinda boring to take pictures of pretty girls next to a window but... I never really had a chance to do it before in my life. So it is something like all jokes are new to a newborn :) digital SLR really help me to experiment, and let me tell you, photo.net is my best muse.... everyday I see jawdropping photos, that make me want to be better photographer. Although I am a total amateur, and only been seriously photographing in the last 8 months I am excited everyday about photography!!! thank you for your ratings, comments, and time...

    greetings from Budapest, Hungary

  2. just fooling aroun. I actually wanted to see how the 85mm on full

frame and the 50mm on 1.6X crop camera would compare, when I ran

into the mirror... this is my reaction, and action.... tell me what

    you think...

  3. Firs I converted the image to blac and white using Petteri's BW action... its still not perfect action, takes time to figure out, but it worth the try. I missed BW ever since I got my DSLR and this gave me back the joy of BW...

at the end of his explanation you can download the action:

So I tweaked the channels (red, blue, green) to get the feeling I was after, first by setting layer for film, then channel mixing the film. Then did the "setup darkroom" option, where I tweaked the dodging and soft light, and contrast and toning..

When I got the results I merged the layers, but something was not right.

I wanted to focus the attention to the subject even more. I was lucky since the texture on the wall was perefect to do the dodging, nothing hard. So I used the dodge tool set to 60 percent strength to midtones, and using large brush, and manually lightened the surroundings of the subject.

The poor man. Next to him is a milk bottle. I found that very odd, regarding the heavy alcohol use of these unfortunate human beings.

I dont really feel right to put this image up, I just wanted your opinion. Someone told me not to put it on the public space, because it is against the rights of the person whose face is recognizable. Since each country has different laws on photographing in the public I am really not sure if what I did with this post is right.

But the photo I really liked...
