  1. That is pretty much the point Helena. The entire idea of "Americana", at least for me, is an example of mythic metaphor - representations of an ideal rather than the real: unending and easily obtainable prosperity, unquestioned moral codes, adherance to traditional gender roles, etc.

I haven't done much "artsy-fartsy" stuff, but this is the first shot of, and inspiration for, what I hope to make an ongoing project exploring the tension that I believe is inherent in the American myth.

Very beautiful and dynamic. I would prefer to have seen the camera tilted up a little more in order to get more of the sky and bridge, but very nice as is, and thoroughly impressive for something shot with a mid-range digital point and shoot.

My favorite of your recent uploads. One of the things that I really like about your "Texture and geometry" stuff is how well they work when completely divorced from the subjects and analyzed simply in terms of color and shape. Many of your images have more of a feel of abstract painting than of photographs.
  2. Excellent composition and transformation of an "ugly" everyday scene. The subject is not immediately recognizeable, which allows for a moments wandering to establish the possibilites. The bands of alternating white/yellow establish a very graphic, abstract feel to the overall image as well. The subject itself comes across in prolonged viewing as hive-like - especially, perhaps, because of the honey-yellow color of the wrap. An image that can seem both playful and somewhat sinister.
  3. Some days I think it adds a nice framing element, some days I don't. I like the idea of the dead tree nestled in the new foliage, but I do think that a little more DOF, to get the rest of the tree in focus and bring out the texture, would have probably worked better. Then again, some days I like the shallow depth of field. (So there you go. ;)
  4. So different from the rest of your portfolio, and very cool. Takes a few second to figure out what the subject might be. Very nice "painterly" composition and I really like the subtle coloring.
  5. The best stuff in your portfolio has a dreamlike quality that this shot most illustrates. The extra saturation and tilted composition most adds to this feel. I also like the little bit of foliage peeking out at the top - given the title of the shot, it puts the viewer in Romeo's shoes, hiding in the bushes and waiting Juliet to appear.

The camera was mounted on a tripod, but I just used it as a brace - like a monopod. I couldn't really set it up on the bus - I got enough "what the hell are you doing" looks as it was. Plus, the shake from the bus itself , which would translate up through the tripod if resting on the floor of the bus, would probably negate any advantage I would get that way. I guess the solution would be to use a faster film, or push the Provia a stop or two, but I haven't gotten very good results pushing Provia 400f, and the faster films that I do have experience with don't provide the level of color rendition that I get from Provia. The shot is taken at around f/4 in order to get a decent depth of field, I would like more, but that was pushing the shutter speed down to being on the edge of holdability (~1/30th or 1/15th).

I'm not discounting your comments, I agree with your comment to a large degree, I'm just not sure how to get from here to there with my equipment and the films with which I have some experience.

Nice, it looks like a movie still from an old noir film. There is too much clutter in the lower and upper right corners - perhaps a step or two to the left or a different angle would have cured?

The hardest part about making this image was attempting to get a

sense of sharpness, while still retaining a feeling of speed and

    movement.

Comments and suggestions are very appreciated.

  6. ...and get this into their collection. I'm not sure what Portland has down there, but there must be something like Seattle's MOHAI (Museam Of History And Industry) and, trust me, they will kill for an image like this. Really great journalistic shot that also manages to be artistically pleasing.
