Never mind, it seems to be a browser thing; they aren't showing up in Firefox but are in IE. I try not to use IE much but I guess I will for that.

When did all the classified ads become nothing but the subject line? There used to be photos, actual descriptions of the items being sold or traded, links to photos made with the gear, etc. Now all I see are the subject lines. I haven't done an exhaustive survey of every single ad but it's been a while since I've seen an ad with any sort of detail at all.
Is my browser messed up, has everyone gotten lazy, or what?

The settings on the D1 are harder than on the D1h or D1x but unless you change them a lot, you can just set them once and forget it. My D1 is set for raw shooting and the only things I change are the metering mode, ISO and focusing point and each of those have their own dedicated external buttons.
That said, the D1h and D1x are better for high ISOs. You can go up to 1600 with the D1 only if you expose it exactly right, otherwise 400 is the safest limit.

I've had Nikon stuff and recently sold some of it to get a used M8. The M8 is small enough to go with me almost everywhere. I could have gotten a D300 + lenses and maybe even a D700 for the same money but they would be sitting at home as they don't fit in my regular daybag. So, the M8 is always with me and the Nikons wouldn't be.
I know the latest Nikons and Canons are great in low light (in fact, I don't think there's a bad camera on the market today, which is great for photographers). But I can't take a photo if I don't have the camera with me. The Leica is a small but professional-level camera that is eminently portable. That's an issue that doesn't show up on any comparison charts.

I like mine, but I got it used.
And, Alex, a Heliopan thin-ring 49mm UV/IR filter, turned backwards, fits fine inside the lens hood for the pre-asph Summilux 35, taking the place of a Series 7 filter.

I was taking some pictures the other day with a Nikon D1x and 17-55 f/2.8, and then an Epson R-D1 (Leica mount) with a Summicron 50. I compared some of the shots last night and noticed that the Leica shots are much sharper and more pleasing to the eye.
Granted, this could be chalked up to sensor differences between the D1x and the R-D1, and the use of a prime lens versus a zoom, but still. The difference was noticeable.

To clarify: Wedge finger and push out, away from the body, not in ...
-
Funny you should ask, I just put one on my D1x a little while ago ... the easiest way is to sort of wedge your finger between the right side of the cap and the body, and push. It should pop off. It tends to go on from left to right and come off the same way. It's plastic so it can flex a little.

All, I have recently acquired a decent-condition Nikon D1x from Adorama (don't
laugh, I've had good luck with them before). It's missing the rubber cover on
the left side, just next to the autofocus switch. It's the cover that, well,
covers the Firewire port and whatever that other port is, neither of which I
will use.
I didn't think the absence of this cover would bother me, but it does. Anybody
know where I could get a new/used one to stick on there? Short of buying a
non-functioning body and cannibalizing it?
Thanks in advance!

Oh, I do have a 17-55 and a 70-180, plus a few random single focal lengths.
-
I use a D1 for newspaper and web shooting and am swapping my D100 for a D1x for everything else (fine art shots, etc.). I'm an early adopter. :)

If you see the headline, "Man killed in freak heated implement/Nair accident, Leica survives unscathed," you'll know what happened. Thanks all!

You can see one of the especially pesky hairs in the middle, at the top of the picture.

I bought a Leica M4 from a fellow forum member (Hi John!) and love it and have
already dragged it halfway around the world (London! Baghdad! Dubai!), dropped
it, etc.
I noticed early on that I was getting what looked like little hairs intruding
into the picture. It drove me nuts trying to figure out what they were (cloth
shutter unraveling? Nasty dust on the lens?).
I have finally figured out that it's the little black "flocking," I guess you
would call it, that's in the slot where the shutter moves. If I open the back
and hold the shutter open, I can see that some of the tiny hairs are sticking
down into the film area.
What can I do about this? They are very tiny. I have moustache scissors and
tried cutting them but they are too small, and I tried shoving them back up into
the body of the camera but as soon as the shutter was released it pushed them
back down again.
It's not the end of the world, as they are easy to clone out, but it would be
nice if they went away. Any quick fix for this, short of getting in there with a
microscope and an exacto knife?
Thanks,
-
