1.
Shooting some high key images and getting what I believe is flare on my subjects. Thought it might be from lack of shade or compendium so I put a compendium on and flare still prevalent so I am thinking the flare is from bounce back off white seamless background. Set up is: white seamless paper, 2 bare strobe heads aimed angle 45 degree or more at background set at 500 ws split to 250 each, main light with medium softbox at 125 watt seconds, subject about 8 feet from background on sweep. Head not flagged. The flare, by the way, is a white fuzzy spot on the subject. As I move around on set and change my shooting height, flare disappears. I am thinking the flare is from either too much power on background or lack of flags. What do you think?

00SsL7-119525584.jpg.bd4224bde12d4f4d6d6ee313c2d4179b.jpg

  2.
I am on the road quite often. South and Central America, Mediterranean, Europe, etc. and I too travel light except for my equipment. Still trying to keep it light as possible, my travel gear includes: d300, sigma 10-20, nikon 18-200, tokina fisheye 10-17 and nikon 60mm macro for my food work. I find I can cover all my needs and don't have the weight of the 2.8s that stay at home.

  3. I have the Tokina and I find it comes in very handy in certain situations when I want a little more "punch" than my 10-20mm sigma zoom can give me. Obviously it is there for special effects as well.
  4. i want to improve my landscape/nature/travel photog with a few n.d. grad

filters but don't know which ones to purchase. my lenses are either 77mm

filter size or i step them up to 77mm (for use with my polarizers, etc.). i do

have a lee apadter ring for 77mm so i need to know which lenses i can use with

the lee and what other type filter holder i have to buy to use n.d. grad

    filters.

i know singh ray makes nd grads but i am not sure how to adapt them. can i use

my lee ring as a start?

any other brands of filters which will work with a system i can use? i want top

quality filters only. thanks for your advice.

  5. thanks for your responses gentlemen:

i dont really need modeling lights for this type of work and i cannot shoot at 3200 or anywhere near that as it would generate too much noise for my purposes.

and yes, sam, what i must do is make the best use of light without major power systems.

what i am trying to assess is anyone's success with the nikon system vs. sb800 and or 800/600 combo.

thanks ronald and sam. i appreciate your input.

  6. have to photo food and cannot bring my power pack set. in the past i have used

the sb800 with success (although i do get some hot spots in certain types of

food)and i am considering the sbr 200 system which , i assume, offers a softer

type of light. is anyone using this for food and, if so, any thoughts?

also, how about using the sb800 and a sb600 for additional background for a

somewhat overexposed background? i assume i can also use just one 800,

backlight the subject and bounce to light up front but, once again, any

    thoughts/experience?

    thanks

  7. "i did install the dng converter on ps cs and had success in saving my photos for editing ".

i am using cs or i should say i was using cs. i got so frustrated that i did download the trial version of cs2. now according to some of the other responses to my original post, one benefit of cs2 is that the nef should open without having to be converted first. i expected this to be the case but after having some new files to edit i tried to open in cs2 and got a message about plug in not being correct. i then took the time to convert to dng using the dng converter and then could edit in the cs2 raw editor.

MY PREFERENCE FOR NOW WOULD BE TO BE ABLE TO PROCESS IN EITHER CS(WITH DNG CONVERT TECHNIQUE) OR TO PROCESS IN CS2 WITHOUT HAVING TO USE THE CONVERTER.

    ANY additional help is appreciated.

  8. can someone please advise again. i did install the dng converter and downloaded another version of ACR2.4 but nothing seems to work now. all was working fine until this morning when i could not open the DNG files again. i have no clue as to what happened between the other day and today. i do see the images in my file browser with the extension of dng. but they don't open in the raw editor. HELP PLEASE!
  9. Phil, Perhaps i am using the wrong terminology re: dng and nef.

This is what i WAS doing step by step to get the photos ready for editing in ps cs: 1. I shot in raw. 2. I connected card reader to computer and clicked on the dng converter that i downloaded from adobe site on advice earlier in first thread. 3. I chose to convert photos in the dng converter. 4. I go into adobe ps cs and find photos and click on one to edit and it opens in the editor that allows me to set temp, tint, expo, shadows, contrast, saturation, brightness.

THE ABOVE PROCESS WAS WORKING FINE BUT NOT SO NOW so that is my problem

    Thanks again.

  10. i have an update to this post:

    http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00K2JP

i did install the dng converter on ps cs and had success in saving my photos for

editing BUT NOW i am home and ready to process/edit all photos and when i try to

open the converted nefs i get a message that says "could not complete your

request because this version of ps does not supply the services required by this

    plug in module."

I do not understand as all was working fine yesterday but does not work today.

    Help please!

  11. thanks to all for guidance. i happen to be on freelance assignment in a foreign country with the new body and thought i was stuck shooting in jpeg but now with the dng converter i have success with raw files.

a bit of a pain to have to do the conversion though. isn't there a way to open nef directly without having to convert? or must i upgrade to cs2 for that luxury?

    thanks again.

  12. i am totally impressed with my one sb 800 and have been considering adding to

    the system.

on locatin for corporate portraits and interior work i work with my strobes.

now i am wondering how a few of the nikon strobes would function in similar

    situations.

my primary use for my one sb 800 has been food photos and interiors where not

    too much lighting is necessary.

and second question is how easy/difficult is it to control the setting on a

    multi nikon cls set up?

    thanks for your input.
