Bjorn, thanks for sharing this remarkable image. I especially appreciate the explanation. You have one of the most interesting and important photography websites on the internet. You certainly don't need photo.net, but I am glad you are posting here because it allows an informal give and take and also increases exposure for your work (even if some viewers don't have the good sense to appreciate it). At the very least, this proves the uselesness of ratings at photo.net. Bob

Thanks to the folks at birdforum.net for identifying this as a female (double breast band) belted kingfisher.

Hi Walter,
That makes the image all the nicer.

Hi Walter. Another spectacular posting. But there is one thing. Maybe it is my old eyes, but the horse seems odd, with what looks like a little bit of a halo around it. Is it something about alpine equines?
Regards,
Bob

I appreciate all the comments on this image. Peter is correct that there is no raw file inasmuch as this is s scan from a 6X7 transparency (Provira). Bob

Very nice. At a quick glance, it is a flower shot, and there are plenty of those around. But this one is much more than that. I particularly like how the background works here to make this image of shape, form and color. You have taken the floral image to the next level. Congrats Walter. Regards. Bob

This is really very beautiful and creative.

Don, this is a perfect panorama. I especially like the shadows and how the complement the shapes.

I appreciate the comment Jim. This is actually what I intended. I was after a sense of speed and movement here. But I often find that what I think I have captured and what others think I have captured are two very different things.

Hardly a fool, Walter. I admire the principled stand you are taking, and I think it is a reasonable response to what is happening here. But it is not the only response, and there may be a better way for those who share these values to use at least a small portion of this forum. I fear all the boycott will do is eliminate the remaining pockets of quality here. Best, Bob

OK Walter, but after reflecting on your comments as well as the observations of others my feeling is yes, you are correct in your objections but incorrect in the boycott. Why do the gallery and ratings matter at all? With the depth of your talent and the obvious and justified interest of people in your work, why can't you use this forum in the way you choose? Which means as a vehicle for posting your work and exchanging thoughful comments with a small group of individuals who don't play the gallery game. Regards, Bob.

Don, thanks very much. I like the edit a lot. The leaf on the left is a contradiction. You have removed it and made the image more cohesive. Thanks.

Luis, this is a nice shot, with a lot of interesting aspects. The problem is that the four major parts (trees, buildings, water, clouds) seem to be competing with each other. Try to reduce two of these through cropping. You might for example crop a little from the (the trees, about half) and a little from the clouds, so that the wate and the buildings are more dominant.

Also have a cropped version of this (thanks for the suggestion, Jim).
Comments always appreciated.

Perfect, beautiful shot. So much going on here but it all comes together wonderfully. Congratulations.

Very beautiful image. Dark horizon line and its placement are excellent.

You are on the money on the blocking point Walter. I should work on this. Thanks.

Thanks very much Walter. As I so admire your work, this is high praise. The shot here is one of my early scanning efforts, and I have often come back wondering if I should not do all the things in PS that will make this more eye catching, but I kind of like the soft, low key feeling, so I am glad that you see it the same way. Regards, Bob.

Walter, thanks for the very clear explanation of how the system has been corrupted. Now I understand your reaction. However, please do consider the part of photonet that does work well, and that is the posting of photographs for the purpose of critiquing. I learn from looking at others and reading comments, and I certainly benefit from the comments I receive. Best, Bob.

Thanks for the comments.
Walter, 200mm and Provia, which has the Velvia look because it is, after all, Bryce at sunset.
Jim, good idea. I posted a crop. I may experiment with this some more.
-
Walter, I am afraid I don't fully understand what you are talking about. I take it there has been some manipulation of the POW, but I have not followed this closely inasmuch as POWs mean nothing to me. The strengths of the forum are the postings and the critiques (not the ratings). Are you suggesting this is also broken? Bob
-
No apology necessary Walter. This is a beautiful photo. What I was wondering about and am still wondering about is whether a more horizontal image in which a good deal of the bottom is cropped would be even more effective. This means losing the reflection, which is a lovely part of this image but, I think, maybe takes something away from its cohesiveness and power. So my very tentative suggestion is to try a verson where forty percent is cropped from the bottom and a just a bit is taken from the right. I would do this and post it by understand how to insert the images here. Regards.

Color shot with very vivid oranges and blues converted to B&W.
Comments appreciated.
