    Gold and Green

Hi Danielle, Beautiful portrait! My preference would be to take out the bright yellow area and tone down the right side a bit so it doesn't draw my eye from her face. I also feel some adjustments in levels and curves would do much to draw out the beautiful colors present...attached illustrates what I'm envisioning. Great work!

  1. Like Luke, I feel the image is quite nice...I think you as the original photographer had a particular vision in mind and that can be quite frustrating to realize in print. I would suggest a couple of things. If you have access to a film scanner, try scanning the negative in directly and working on it in Photoshop...even though you may ultimately want a print from wet processes, it could help you come up with a strategy that won't cost you a lot in wasted paper and chemicals. On future outings try to get in the habit of carrying with you a small manual flash and SC-17 (or other) cord so it can be operated off camera...I know the "fill flash" advice gets old, but a small dollop of light in this situation would have achieved the result you are looking for; plus put a little catch light in their eyes. I have a small Vivitar flash that I set to underexpose by a 1/3 stop to what my camera meter reads...it gives me the balance I want without a harsh flash look to it. I really like the compostition a lot...and 'no', I would have not skipped the shot. Best wishes

Wow...looks "alive/real" enough to me! I like the composition fine. Color looks accurate. My personal preference would be to have the background more out of focus, the strands of green grass IMO are a little distracting. Do you recall what aperture you were shooting at? Perhaps a longer focal length would do the trick. I guess you could try blurring in PS, but the nice thing is that this EXACT same shot is there waiting for you to come back to ;-)

Interesting series Trine...I like this "splash" the best; at first glance my imagination placed a fish in the scen. Also like the blue toning. Best wishes
  2. Nice job. Overall the composition is well proportioned and exposed considering the difficult lighting contrasts. The pieces of driftwood are great opportunities...I would suggest composing around only one of them and bringing it in closer to create a stronger area of interest to the foreground. I love that low lying cloud!

Beautiful portrait, really like the pose and lighting to her face. My only hesitation is that the upper left area is very bright and tends to draw my eye away from her face. Might be interesting to experiment with different crops or burning in that bright area to tone it down a bit. Best wishes

Natalia - This is a gorgeous shot, love the light! I think you've got a bad scan(sratches and noise)...but I would encourage you to work with it a bit. Attached are a few modest modifications I made in Photoshop, I believe this one can be salvaged. Best wishes

    Jellies

I just posted a shot of jellies this morning myself! I like the subtle/glowing colors in this image along with the density and varying sizes animals...always interesting to me what care is required to keep jellyfish in captivity, yet I see them all the time in Puget Sound floating amongst garbage. Great decision on adding the sky...the added oblique lines make this a wonderfully dynamic composition. My only hesitation is the contrail...perhaps too parallel to the horizon IMO. Nice work!

Excellent portrait, Ben. I really like the shallow DOF and pleasing skin tones. Her facial expression is interesting; I'm not certain what to make of it. Nice work.

Great image! Interesting looking bird and I like the added textures from the cord. The background color is also intersting...seems to have a bit of noise; for your consideration, I ran it through neat image and adjusted curves to punch color.

Nice portfolio! .I really like this particular image a lot; zoom rack during exposure?? Hope you don't mind...wanted to see what this one would look like with a tad more punch (adjusted contrast and color in curves). Best wishes.

Wow...is that what's really happening here?? More of an editorial shot to me, so I don't find the fingertip all that intrusive. The image could use some curves work, attaching a sample to illustrate what I mean. Regards

Great sharpness and contrast...the mirror-still water is very cool. Immediately to the boy's left side there is a squiggle in the tonal transition to white, is it intentional? Regards
