I haven't posted on photo.net in forever, but this particular image sparked me to rattle on a little.

I am so tired of high contrast blurry water, fog, clouds and things covered up by blurry water, fog, and clouds. Some of your landscapes are very well done, this one is a mediocre shot fancied up with some blur and a heavy mouse finger on curves in photoshop. It's unusual and thats about all.

It's like a bad song...you can't make a bad song great no matter how many amazing musicians you have playing on it or how many times the bad chorus repeats. It will always be a bad song. No amount of positioning/cropping/contrast/blurry water fog mist will make this a great photo. It will always be a mediocre shot.

That said, I enjoy some of your other work. Large format should be your tool of choice, some of those good shots would be great with a few simple movements.

this is really excellent gerald. i like the feel created by the odd perspective. it really works well with the position of the images characters and graphic elements.

yes. i love the cartoon feel here. the lighting and angle really add to the shot. the blown out bg and overall sheen give it a light feel even though we are looking at the ass of a dead vole.
  1. excellent. . . champagne. perfect. or perhaps beer. yes. beer. perfect. let us all drink beer and champagne and look at great photos of dyed flowers. it all sounds so glamorous.

but in all seriousness. i agree with marc. this is not the perfect leslie hancock pow, but a perfect pow, at least in its current state. oh, and leslie, i think the aliens dropped your dog off at my house. hes a german shepherd dyed to look like a poodle. . . right?

  2. congrats leslie, #2 huh. i enjoy your photography immensely. i do regret your decision to lower your standards to the D30 level. sure this image can be appreciated here on screen, but how well would it stand up as a print, next to say a 4x5 or Medium format or even a well shot 35mm cousin. if we are now accreditting sololy the idea, so be it, but photography is about the print not the scrint. sure ive seen some decent prints from digital cameras. ive made some in the past. but driving a car backwards never made since to me, you can go so much faster with more resolution. somebody give leslie 8gs so he can get a 1ds.
  3. The idea here is good, exploring the slow motion of figure. I would, however pull the model away from the seamless and try to get rid of that seamless curve. I dont think it works with your composition.

I really enjoy the new images jay. This one in particular is quite well done. The decayed effect makes for a very interesting photograph. I think I might prefer a tone that was a little more tan though, not so green. But it is great none-the-less.

Looks like you got a new camera as well, hope its inspiring.

  4. This shot is nice, but I think it could be improved with a solid black background and perhaps a slight turn to the right for the model, nude would also relieve some of the stress in this image as the above poster mentioned.

I enjoy the idea of this picture, but I find the dark area in the lower left a bit distracting. I want it to be a darker tone there but not black. It pulls the frame down too much. The subject, however, is very interesting, and I love the out of the ordinary framing.

This is good. I like the feel, she looks quite serious. I would like some more sharpness throughout, the hands are starting to fall out of focus and I think that works agaisnt you here.
