The composition here really works well, isolating the subject and using all that great negative space. I like the way the tomato looks as if its been yanked off the fine and then delicatley placed and positioned. The jpg artifacts are pretty bad but its PN, what can you do?

This is really great Eugene. It has movement and style. The double exposure works well here, playing off the dominant shapes. The lighting is also very well done, the thick shadow just pours down her back and along her leg.

one of your best. it points in new directions. i enjoy the simple composition and soft focus, although a complimenting sharp focus shot would be interesting.

    good stuff.

  1. This shot has power.

I would suggest however a PS trick or two to focus the image a bit more. First the circle on the wall in the bottom right of the frame. . . clone that away please. I might also do a little more dodging and burning, again thinking towards focusing the viewer into the photo.

    Love your work.

The idea here is great. The method. . . not so great. The picture is not straight vertically, which is fairly distracting. This could be fixed in PS. The dark area on the lower left is also a bit distracting, maybe a crop right there just below the last set of tuning pegs. The B string tuning knob is also a little too bright, draws the eye too much.

oh, I need this image on a big piece of film, 8x10 enlargement wont do this image justice.

    Great shot.

Im not sure if you are pro or con towards PS manipulation but I think this image would be worth it. The composition and lighting are fantastic, but that dark blotch in the upper corner is distracting and takes away from the main subject and really doesnt seem to add anything to the image.

I would PS out that dark area with the clone tool. I think it would refocus the image down and towards the main subject. . . the boat.

    Great work.

  2. hmm. . . everybody seems to be questioning this photo, and all this talk about metaphysics and such made me laugh. Please people, we are talking about a low res photo posted on a website scanned from 35mm. Joseph Coalter, mentioned something earlier about a 20x40 print of this image. I would dare say it would look pretty bad. The image has some merrit in composition and color, but if we are going to question the artistic merit I think we really must look to the capture medium. 35mm is entirely too small to grasp this type of image imoh, and the internet could never do it justice. It screams to be big big big and 35mm cant make that happen. I would compare this to a demo track for an upcoming record. . . "wow thats a great song, I bet the album will be fantastic," kinda thing. The album in this photo's case would be a bigger negative and a huge print. The artistic vision is there but the canvas is too small.

As a viewer here on PN you have to have some imagination. You have to be able to step into the gallery in your mind and imagine a particular image there on the wall, but for this particular image the technical restraints of 35mm really hold it back from being truly great.

with that said. . . I enjoy your folder Phil and I congratulate you on POW.

I love the image, but your explanation of developing seems odd. Overexposure and Underdeveloping reduces contrast. The lighting must have been quite extreme.

hmm. Its almost sad. The framing is great, but I think the lighting could be a little more emotional, maybe softing up that bright ring around the center of the flower.

The focus point really doesn't work for me here. The concept and idea are good, but I think you might need some camera movements to really fine tune the focus area, maybe give us a little skin texture in the bottom right.

Instead of a view camera you could also mount your SLR on a tripod and take 2 different shots and meld them together in photoshop to create focus where ever you choose.

Lasse's work is groundbreaking photography at its best. It challenges the very ideas of photography, but that doesn't make it not photography. I believe that makes this more than just a photo, but an important photo.

I can still appreciate a good photograph that plays on the old themes with new ideas, such as Tony's or Doug's work, which I enjoy as well.

Lets all go take pictures, but be careful not to post anything new and different because we will have to make a whole new website for that so no one gets his/her feathers ruffled.
