  1. Try this link for Leica Shop in Vienna. These are the results from an auction they held on Nov.27. The sixth camera down is a black paint M3 that sold for 9,500 Euros or $11,231.

Also at Ritz Camera they are listing an almost new in box black M3 for $20,000.

  2. Daniel-

I suppose most most everything has been said, but: Do not let people tell you that these cameras are hard to load. The instructions are clear and if followed, the camera loads easily enough.

True, this kit you've got is 50+ years old, but as already mentioned, this was top of the line gear in the 50's. Both of those lenses are terrific. To me, you've been presented an opportunity to study photograpy beyond the "push this button" style of automated picture taking. And if I may: I doubt any of us will be handing down today's digital gear to our decendants.

Look on Ebay for a manual for your IIIf Red Dial. I've forgotten the name, but there is a seller who will provide a printed manual or burn you a copy on CD.

  3. Mr Smith-

It is not so much a question of obscenity, rather it is the perception of you gloating. Whether you were or not, your post sort of has the tone of rubbing others' noses in it.

I suppose we've all used Rodinal for 35 years.

  4. Keep 'em coming Al. I agree with Mr. Baker, this work is more interesting to me than much of the w/nw posts.

I mostly just read the forum these days, but I once had a posting pulled by Tony for asking whether anyone else was bored with the forum. I must say that these postings keep me from asking the question again. I think we are the beneficiaries of the persceptive offered by posts from Al and others with some real world photography experience.

I've always felt this should be more than an "equipment only" forum. It doesn't have to be taken with a Leica to be a good photograph.

    Thanks Al.

  5. Trevor-

I found a copy of "An English Eye" a few years ago in a used bookstore. At the time I'd not heard of Mr. Ravilious, what a discovery for me. Beautiful photographs. I like how he talks of using developers of the "compensating type". I've always wondered about that hood, do you have any idea what it looked like?

  6. Hi Erica-

Since the M-mount collapsible Summicron came out in 1954, I think that had been his primary lens through the years. Of course in the early thirties it would have to have been an Elmar. I've also read that in the later 30's and war years he used Zeiss Sonnar f1.5 in Leica mount (I may have the date wrong here)

Like you, I've always been curious about film too. I've read it was Ilford's HP3 in those days. I think there is a website that lists the timeline of Ilford films and their rated speeds.

Maybe we'll find out real soon :)

  7. You might try Stephen Choi at stevecamera.com. He is listed on the LHSA website at a sourse of Leica Repair. I've read good things about his service on other threads in this forum.

They are on Supulveda, near the 405 and 90 freeway interchange.

  8. I agree with Leonard. I bought one in March for $199. It needs an element recoat but is in terrific comsmetic and mechnical condition. Unless shooting into the sun there is no flare and the images are remarkably sharp. John Van Stelton at Focal Point quoted me about $250 for a CLA and front element recoat.

I'm no expert but I wouldn't believe any claim about a Leitz lens from the 50's to be haze free. Unless a bright light is shined thru the lens, you won't see the haze. It also should not affect image quality to any appreciable degree.

In other words, unless the lens has had a recent CLA, I would count on some haze whether you spend $199 or $350.

  9. I read awhile back that while doing a portrait assignment when he was in his early 90's (don't recall who the subject was) HCB made the comment that "sharpness is a bourgeois concept".

In other words according to Merriam-Webster: Bourgeois - marked by a concern for material interests and respectability and a tendency toward mediocrity.

Perhaps the current Summicron is in fact "too good".

  10. I don't have any of the published materials on the Leica system, so

    I thought I'd ask:

What is the difference of an orange filter with an "A" versus one

with "Or"? My guess is that they are of the same filter factor, but

just of a different age. I would like to buy one in E39 for my

    collapible Summicron.

Any help is always appreciated. Thanks everyone.
