  1. It’s wild you mentioned wanderlust regarding the second photo. That was the theme of the art journal in which that image was accepted. That was well before the show I referred to in this post, which has ended. I’m learning a lot from all this feedback though, so thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  4. I completely agree with the first sentence, but based on the title, Hospitality Corner, I wouldn’t have thought the OP’s intent was to make an unsettling image. Unless the title is meant sarcastically, of course, but I read it at face value.
  5. Just a thought, could you accomplish some of that my upping the contrast? Maybe then the exposure would not need so much of an increase.
  6. Interesting. Two suggestions come to my mind. 1. I think the 1:1 aspect ratio works but I would tighten the composition to cut out some of the space to the right of the chair by pulling up the bottom right corner a little and pulling down the top right corner a bit more. 2. The pavers and mug look blown out so maybe see if you can recover some of the details there. Adjusting the exposure to the whole image would also darken the black chair, which I think would also be an improvement.
  7. I think that much exposure increase makes it a bit too flat, at least compared to the first. The strong shapes accentuated by the glossy highlights make the original much more interesting. Something in between these two would be well worth a try.
  8. This might be better. I’m on a phone so I can’t tell if the image can tolerate the crop, but I think a closer one works better compositionally
  9. First, thanks for your comments on my photo in the critique forum. I didn’t see a notification for it so I only just saw it yesterday. I think the flowers are a bit monotonous, but the space the tree shows through in the upper left is interesting. I took a stab at cropping it in a way to emphasize the flowers framing of the tree.

  11. The b&w is nice but I think the original color shot is as well. The curve of the wheel well is an important element IMO, and I think seeing a tiny bit more of it would help. If this is cropped from a larger image I would scooch the crop to the right until the left edge of the frame is about halfway between where it is now and the vertical seam/edge of the panel.

  14. Black and white is often so much better in portraits and this is a great example. I understand that our perception of shape depends largely on contrast of value, so eliminating color really emphasizes features. Your subject has an interesting expression, which B&W serves well.
  15. Thanks, I appreciate the thoughts. For what it’s worth those are pretty standard rules that the vast majority of my bird photos follow. I was going for something different here. Shot this during the height of the pandemic and the composition with birds exiting the frame (or just flying away as in the other image) felt suitable for the time, and I thought the synchronization of their wings made the perspective work despite being from obliquely behind the birds. Like most things, works for some, not for others. Cheers.
