guillaume_polizzi
hello all,
I'm new to this forum and i'm coming here because i couldnt find an answer to my question so far..
It's about my canon EOS 20D sensor cleaning, after a year without being used i've found some "artefacts" appeared on the pictures... I know there is a lot of stuff said and shown about it...BUt it's no dust.. i've ordered a cleaning kit from visible dust which came very complete with all the bells and whistles... but the "cracks" won't disappear..
Yes this looks like what i can only describe as "veins" or cracks.. like a mycosis..
I've took a picture for you to see.

Any input will be GREATLY appreciated since i'm in a state of .. despair right now i'd say. .

Thanks guys !

ps: forgive me if i made some mistakes, english is not my first language.

jamie_robertson2
I'm afraid you're going to need a new camera. Those marks are either fungus growing underneath the anti-aliasing filter that sits above the sensor or some sort of adhesive or coating breaking down. No amount of cleaning will help.
Robin Smith
I'd agree with Jamie, this looks like serious fungus or, possibly, cracks. If you stop the lens down to the smallest aperture (f16-22) you may be able to bring the lines into sharper focus and determine more accurately what they are. Either way you will need a new sensor or (hopefully) just a vigorous cleaning (best done by Canon in this case I think).
Robin Smith
JDMvW
If you are naturally an optimist, then some of the 'cracks' look like more like fibers to me than like fungus. Try what Robin suggests to try to get better definition on them.
I think it's premature to "despair", but contact Canon about whether they can look at it and repair or clean it only if it doesn't cost more than a $100 US or so.
You can buy functional 20D bodies on eBay for $100-200, so that may in fact be your best option since repairs may not be worth it. In fact, a 30D or higher is not much more, so you might "upgrade" while you're at it.
JosvanEekelen
Perhaps it is possible to convert the camera to IR by replacing the filter with a IR one. The cost of this will be higher than the value of the 20D so it's only a valid option when you want to use the camera for IR and/or black and white.
JPDupre
This camera was introduced in 2004. It has is an 8 MP sensor.
Unless the owner has very specific and personal reasons to keep it, I would not pay a dime to have it repaired, cleaned, or whatever.
OK. Perhaps 25$ at a local camera repair shop. No more than that and certainly not 100$.
guillaume_polizzi
yes it definitely looks like fungus to me too..
I feared an answer like "time to change camera".. but if it can't be helped.. arghhh
I'll try to take a picture with a better definition for this to show.
paddler4
Completed sales on eBay show many 40D bodies selling for under $150.

dominic_t._lupico
Yes I agree with the advice of looking into another body. I just bought a pristine 40D with original paperwork and software for $130/$12 shipping.
