Robin Smith
I always use it. The only time I don't is when taking sports, when I use the shutter release for focusing.
Robin Smith
fred_strobel1
It is second nature to me now. The only disadvantage I find is if you want someone else to use the camera they would be clueless. On second thought that might be an advantage.

jcosyn
I always use back-button focus. I think every serious photographer I know uses it. It takes only a short time to get used to, and there are no disadvantages that I can think of, whereas there are very definite advantages. It's much easier to press a button than to half-press one, especially when you're moving to recompose or follow a moving subject. It is also often convenient to decouple the focus button from the exposure lock button. And it is easier to maintain continuous focus on a fast-moving object (e.g. for sports, aviation or race shots, birds in flight, etc.). It just gives you a better level of control over what your camera is doing. I've yet to hear a good argument NOT to go with BBF; the only argument most people seem to come up with is "I can't be bothered taking the time to get used to it."
Uhooru
I have used and liked the back button focus, but lately I prefer using AE lock instead. My camera allows very quick moving of the focus point so I lock my exposure first.
