nasser1
Dear all, yesterday I developed 2 sheet of 8x20 film, but I could not know why the film base (surrounding unexposed area) is not clear (dark)....! is it because of the hardening fixer?

Developer D-76, kodak Hardening fixer
Thank you in advance
Nasser
Alan Marcus
Film is under-fixed or film is fogged due to age, exposure to light - heat - radiant energy - over development etc.
I suggest under -fixed -- no harm to re-fix in normal room light. This time immerse a piece of film along with the sheet film. Place all in a tray of fixer solution. Time how long it takes for the test film to change from opaque to clear. Keep the sheet film in the fix for double this time. Then wash in running water for 30 minutes then wetting agent then dry. This likely will improve the base fog you are complaining about.

jose_angel
I like to use fresh film just for this reason... expired film use to show a darker base. No matter if stored in the freezer, "cosmic rays" do their work.
Not an issue at all, but I prefer to have a perfectly clear base..
glen_h
Many films use a slightly gray base, instead of just a back antihalation layer.
But if it is more than slightly dark, it is something else.
-- glen
