Laura Weishaupt
Catalpa, yes they're big and pretty. I've got lots and they seed them selves. Come dig one up.
Mary Doo
Really? It is so beautiful. Can you send one over? ;)

Perhaps I should visit that area again to see if there are small ones that I can dig up - hopefully not ending up in jail. Or maybe clip a twig to see if it can be rooted. Thanks
Two23
Yes, a catalpa, sometimes called a "cigar tree" because of the long seed pods.

Kent in SD
JDMvW
Laura offers, because many who are blessed with catalpas (catawbas) find them to be a little too "enthusiastic" in seed production ;)
maury_cohen
That reminds me of a great scene in the WC Fields movie; The Bank Dick.
Fields is forced at gunpoint to drive a getaway car for a bank robber, and during the ensuing chase, as he's cruising along at a good clip (obvious rear projection effect) he turns completely around and points back saying "Those are Catalpa trees". Car goes off the road and almost loses control.
Laura Weishaupt
They look good and grow quickly. In 10 years you have a place to put a chair in some shade. It's not the strongest tree, but overall the ones in the yard took Sandy and the big snow storm a year prior as well as other trees. There are a few on adjacent property that may only last a few more years. They are big and somewhat hollow and sound like huge drums when the wood peckers go at them. Mary, I'll let you use one of my shovels. ;-)
Mary Doo
Thanks Laura. First I'm going to go back to that brook and see if this tree shares the "enthusiasm". :)
