MichaelChang
John, I bet you'll be able to do it reasonably well with just a couple of week's of intensive practice - on the photoshop side; making the later photo match the early one in lighting and color gradation, in-camera or post, might be much trickier.

I'm sure all of us have at least one early photo of ourselves that we can try this on. Might be fun.
lex_jenkins
Very clever, and poignant.

Flora Borsi, an incredibly talented young conceptual photo artist, gained some web notoriety last year by 'shopping herself into classic news photos of past decades. It's so well done the only tipoff is her ever-present phone or digital cam.

But where Flora's 'shops relied on humor and absurdity, Chino Otuska delves into the more personal realm of self-re-imagination.
gulfbeach47
Thanks Michael, I would need a lot of practice. Unfortunately, I have forgotten a lot of the PS lessons that I learned in college and have such a hard time with my comprehension skills. I would definitely need video photoshop tutorials for the technically challenged.
I agree that many of us probably have photos of when we were young that we can try this with. This is the most exciting idea that I have seen in awhile.

I look a lot like my dad at various ages. It would pretty wild to try this with a photo that I took of him in his 50's or so and plant myself in their with him, just to compare the likeness.

These ideas could be a new way for some photographers to generate a little bit of the income lost to the multitude of everyday people that now own decent cameras, but do not have the technical skills to achieve this process.
Curious what some of you would charge to do just the photo session and then time spent for photo manipulation, not including print or cd of image?

This Present-Day Self into Childhood Photos might also be fun for the Pnet monthly photo contest a few months down the road. Members would need a fair amount of time to look for images, take the photo and in my case, LOTS of practice:) I hope we at least see a thread of these photos from members.

I congratulate photographer Chino Otsuka. I find myself looking at the photos over and over thinking that can't be real and that it is Chino and her daughter.

Ps... Thanks Michael... Somehow I missed your earlier post with the video of Chino. A big thanks to Phil B. for this thread.

etphoto
Very impressive PhotoShop work. I consider myself fairly good at PhotoShop and I don't think I could do what she has done. I might give it a try in the next week or so though.
Good find. Thanks for posting.

lex_jenkins
That Gillian Wearing video was hilarious and disconcerting. For some reason I immediately watched this as a followup: "The Exorcist in Linda Blair's own voice". The contrast with the more familiar Mercedes McCambridge voiceover had a similar vibe.

I've seen several childhood reinvention photo projects lately, including a pair of brothers who did Santa photos every year, even as adults; and at least two different projects of siblings recreating childhood snapshots, most of which were very funny.

But Chino Otuska's have a mesmerizing quality - reverent, a little unsettling, yet not jokey or gimmicky.
MichaelChang
Scroll down a bit from her Portfolio link is her "Generations" photos - there is a level of honesty about it that makes me relate to them as family snapshots yet feel something more special than that.
