  1. I'd like to renew as well, but not under the current auto-renew structure using my credit card - PayPal as it was works for me. Let me just add that I've been inactive for 3 years and frankly there's nothing keeping me here except for an inexplicable sense of loyalty which I'm still willing to pay for, but just not under the current payment terms.
  2. Seems like a video made deliberately dramatic for the purposes of going viral. A science teacher would have used a magnifying glass or binoculars with a dummy head rather than needlessly sacrifice a perfectly good camera just to see smoke coming from it. Maybe next time someone will try to outdo it by burning up a medium format digital mounted on an observatory telescope.
  3. I can't find it under "Account" either - I do recall once seeing it and even asked about it in the forum. Now the only way I can find it is through a search: Search our Community | Photo.net Maybe the link only becomes visible when ones subscription runs out.
  4. I recall Bill was ill for quite some time. Thanks for the update, Lannie. RIP - gib | photo.net
  5. If you think photography can get expensive with its "hidden" costs, try astronomy some time! Some hobbies can require a room filled with gear depending on what you want to achieve so it shouldn't come as a surprise if a ton of money gets spent.
  6. I know quite a few young folks who have never used film but are fascinated by it similar to hipsters gravitating toward vinyl. When asked about film, I tell them just don't chimp and wait 2 days to download picture, and you will have enjoyed the film experience.
  7. I'm reminded of all these YouTube content creators spending tons of money on gear and untold numbers of hours making 4K videos, and I view them in 360p, IF I even look at them at all. It's even worse on photography sites; I can tell within milliseconds if I want to even bother to view the photos, let alone viewing them in full res.; that's the reason I only send people images no larger than VGA.
  8. Try: microphone 5/8" to 1/4" adapter - Google Search
  9. "I wish they explained a bit about how the lens worked." I poked around for their patent but wasn't successful; maybe they're withholding tech info until they make some commercial headway.
  10. Details in the video linked below: B.C. company unveils new high-tech lenses that could change everything | Watch News Videos Online
  11. I've been here for 17 years and have witnessed the site evolve from policy to management changes and many attempts at site improvements. Maybe it's not the site at all, rather limitations of the medium is no longer able to sustain our interest and where the social element is not considered important, or maybe us old-timers have simply moved on but still hanging on the past for its nostalgia. Let's hope a new generation of photographers will find the site inviting and inspiring and call PN their new home as we did when we still had fire in the belly, but I can't see myself taking the necessary time to relearn site navigation and start all over again.
  12. "I am always switching from manual to portrait to TV etc and am always unsure which settings and functions I need to use." Those are the very rudiments of photography which you can learn from a few YouTube tutorials in a couple of hours, but mastering those techniques and employing them on the fly will unfortunately take more than a few weeks. Nonetheless, try a YouTube search for "Wedding Photography"; it'll at least be more comprehensive than any written text anyone can offer here. It's a lot of pressure to be the photographer for such a special occasion, but there's always the option to suggest or recommend an alternate photographer for the couple, or you can simply try your best while making it clear to the couple that your results might not meet their expectations.
  13. " From all I have read he seems to be a very well informed professional."<br><br> It shouldn't matter what others think if that's your impression - just continue reading if you find it beneficial, or move on if you no longer find his writing helpful.
  14. Mary, I'm on a PC laptop with Chrome Version 56.0.2924.87 (64-bit) and it runs fine, but the problem is there's nothing to see as all my photos disappeared..!
  15. Hi Glenn, are you able to help me with my concerns? I've been a subscriber long enough to demonstrate my support for the site even though I've been inactive. While I'd like to continue my support, given my experience with site security and continuing to receive SPAM originating from my PN email address, I'm sure you won't blame me for hesitating to give out my credit card information let alone its annual billing. So here's what I'd like to know: 1) where can I find my subscription expiration date; and 2) can I renew by way of PayPal in 3-year increments as before; and 3) can I change my PN email address for the purposes of eliminating SPAM messages. Many thanks.
  16. Thanks, Sandyv; I wish there weren't so many obstacles when I want to pay.
  17. I don't mind the new look as long as it's more secure than the old site, so I won't receive endless SPAM.
  18. I can't seem to find the PayPal option anywhere; only credit card info which I prefer not doing, and I also can't find when my current subscription expires. Many thanks.
  19. <p>RIP Mary Tyler Moore. </p> <p>Here are some <a href="https://www.google.ca/search?q=mary+tyler+moore&rlz=1C2LENP_enCA651CA651&biw=1440&bih=808&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=0ahUKEwimkbTR7t_RAhWEJCYKHaClDP0Q_AUIBigB#q=mary+tyler+moore&tbm=isch&tbs=rimg:CfVTbGiQ6tFZIjiOURDpGtWwGtIZlthl2-INstiDMzDmCd0kNtmJdFARTbgT3gaL_1I4Lmf1TOfWwzr5Bt_1kpDjMrZSoSCY5REOka1bAaEcREhfjRNIfTKhIJ0hmW2GXb4g0RTv8GUwPac3sqEgmy2IMzMOYJ3REcRpARK52X3SoSCSQ22Yl0UBFNEa8bws06NQ3jKhIJuBPeBov8jgsR4YeIgn5SiN8qEgmZ_1VM59bDOvhFgaxcacYXU6CoSCUG3-SkOMytlEeG5CZ--WEiN&imgrc=cywMTj2vsZ_yUM%3A">photos</a> of her with Dick Van Dyke and I find <a href="http://media1.s-nbcnews.com/j/newscms/2017_04/1878931/ss-170125-mary-tyler-moore-ok-03_4bd946abcac97f9c6f8205da78d11322.nbcnews-ux-1024-900.jpg">this one</a> particularly charming. </p> <p>Which do you like? </p>
  20. <p>Your second shooter might be feeling insecure about the quality of the pictures or there might have been serious technical flaws rendering them unacceptable.</p> <p>You might try reassuring this person that you'd like to have the photos regardless, even if they are unacceptable - it's all part of the learning process; hence second shooter looking for experience. </p> <p>In the future, you might want to supply the memory cards and take them immediately after the shoot to avoid these sorts of problems. </p>
  21. <blockquote> <p><em> "I'm outraged"</em></p> </blockquote> <p>I would be too, and the only answer I can off is to sue. </p> <p>Why? Because you'll likely run into clients like that again, so taking a stand as a matter of policy is in your own business interest in the long haul. <br> <em> </em></p>
  22. <p>You can rent a prime wide angle lens for a day which cost around $20-$40 around my area in Canada, but you'll have to leave a deposit which might be a few hundred dollars.</p> <p>As for a specific lens choice, you might try Google Images for a lens of interest to see some sample photos, or look for online reviews. <br> </p>
  23. <p>Nice shots, Ian. Looks like the train stayed a bit longer in Windsor.</p> <p>The stop in my area was just about an hour and traffic was so congested that most people couldn't get across the highway to see or donate their goods or money, so most of us stayed across the highway to watch, and it was freezing cold but worth it! About half the visitors were kids. </p>
  24. <p>Derek, yes, the camera is under full control of the tablet with just a USB cord, but it must be an OTG (on-the-go) USB cord. </p> <p>As in most instances, the more you want to do, the more complicated it gets especially on a budget. Here are a few things to consider:</p> <p>My tablet can't charge and use USB peripherals at the same time so battery life will be limited - this is because development of the OTG function was still rather new at the time so make sure anything you buy will be able to do this. You'll need a cheap eBay adapter which will allow 3-4 additional USB ports, and also consider getting a power bank - I bought a cheap case off eBay and use recycled laptop batteries.</p> <p>I much prefer using my Windows tablet - it can run all Windows applications so I feel right at home, and by design Windows tablets can charge and USB at the same time which opens all sorts of possibilities for expansion. It's also fully equipped with Bluetooth etc.. </p> <p>A free iPhone will be a good place to start experimenting but you'll need to find equivalent apps which I'm sure is available.</p> <p> </p>
  25. <p>Hi Derek, my Android tablet is an Azpen A729 which is a couple of years old, dual core 1.5GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, & 8GB SSD + 32G SD card with Android 4.2 - cheap and very functional for my purposes. It was $50 in Canada during a sale and I've heard it was as low as $20 in the U.S.. </p> <p>I'm sure newer models are just as cheap and with even better specs. </p> <p>The tablet is as reliable and functional as anything I've owned, and I use it for OBD2 (car), Wi-Fi phone calls when I need to, camera control (D5100), telescope control via Bluetooth, audio work, doubles as a TV with a USB ATSC tuner, GPS offline navigation and more. It' a perfect companion to my Windows 10 tablet (Vulcan VTA080IS16 DC). </p> <p>I don't need Triggertrap since the camera's USB plugs directly into the tablet's USB OTG port. </p> <p> </p>
