Chances of a replacement for 580EX II?

Hello:
I'm about to graduate from one flash unit to two, in my amateur photography journey. (I'd like to have another for portraiture.) Another 580EXII would be just fine. The 'equipment hog' in me is wondering if there is another flash coming up from Canon. I know of none, but the 'equipment hog' would hate to buy a 580 and then another flash come out by Canon. Any info appreciated and thanks for your time.

As always, only Canon knows for sure what their future product plans are. But the 580EX II is a relatively recent model, and I don't think there have been a lot of people complaining about features that it's missing. I suspect it won't be replaced any time soon.

That's my opinion, worth exactly what you paid for it :-)

Canon just released 2 new models with wireless remote releases (like a RC-1 built-in) and one with a video light: 270II & 320EX. If you need a smaller wireless model one of these might be the ticket.

Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see.

I too would like to get more 580 II's (so far I have two), but a replacement would be welcome! There is nothing wrong with the features, well maybe one, but I like to see a better shielding of radio frequencies, so my PW - TT5's would work without a glitch. About the one feature that is wrong with the 580 II is that there is no 2nd-curtain sync available, once you're in wireless mode. There is no reason for this limitation as that feature is found in almost all other brands that offer wireless. So that one I like to see changed as well in a replacement of the 580 II.

Not too many people are complaining about the 580EX II these days, so I doubt a new model will be coming out soon. One thing I wish they would fix/enhance is the Automatic mode(External metering) which is supposed to simulate thyristor based flash. It works fine on the 1D/1Ds, but on any other EOS camera you have to manually enter the ISO and aperture values from your camera each time.

I much prefer my Metz 58 AF-1 (now 58 AF-2) to my Canon 580EX.
Will Crockett from ShootSmarter.com rated it higher too. And it is available right now. Take a look and read some of the reviews. Good luck! Here's a sample from the Metz with a Demb Flip-it straight with almost no post processing.
