PuppyDigs
It's not a matter of trust. Some of us merely prefer nice solid feel of cold metal in our hands. Plastic squeaks and flexes and just feels third world, but obviously it can be very strong and durable if you can stomach the cheap feel.
Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter

mars c
Yeah , I know what you mean, I've first hand experience with my own 350d and 1ds, The 350d feels like a toy in comparison, But it is very durable, As it is still alive today, being used by a friend of mine. The 1ds is heavy, But feels like a camera carve out of a solid stone, Very solid, Which I like alot.
dogbert
I find that metal ages gracefully and after 10 years of absue or more gets a classic look to it. My 35 year old Pentax MX still feels and looks wonderful despite having the odd knock. I have owned three plastic rebels and all wore badly. They still took photos but had the look of old abused plastic food containers.

Brad_
I could care less what my cameras look like. I have a canon 450D and its light weight is super for one- handed shooting. Has been banged around a lot on the street and works great. For me it's about photos, not gear aesthetics/affinity. www.citysnaps.net
PuppyDigs
I don't give a rat's ass about photos. Ah ain't no friggen art-fart! Anybody can make great images today. Just one handed point 'n shoot while holding a friggen caffè. It's about ownership pride, hand candy and freakin' feel! I oft take my FM3A out of the cupboard just to fondle it and quickly wipe it off and put it back...

Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. mjferron
I have a thing about plastic bodies as well but in the end I'll grab my N80 instead of my F100 for travel. Remember Milwaukee changed to partial plastic housings on their pro power tools many years ago and no one call those tools cheap. I'm more concerned with the quality of switches, control dials and battery/card doors. Those are things that can make a camera feel cheap.
DickArnold
I killed a canon A2 stone cold dead trying to shoot a soccer game in pouring rain against a deadline. My repair guy and I could not resuscitate the poor thing. He got it for parts. It was then I decided to buy a 1n. Having been in aviation most of my work life I have followed, on profressional basis the introduction and acceptance of the use of plastics in airplanes. We called them composites. The 787 is 50 per cent carbon re-enforced plastic. As a pilot I think the heft and feel of the airplane will probably ok but not as re-assuring as the feel of a metal camera frame to those who don't believe.. peterafle
Plastic or metal aside, the amazing thing is that BOTH those cameras (and more remarkably the lenses, scratches, cracks and all) still take more than acceptable images after all that abuse (see "Part 2" of that video).
rafael_s
That's the best durability test I've ever seen. They should be doing tests like that on dpreview.com. Would like to see a real shutter actuation test as well, just to see how far they could go...
